Medical Director - Liver Transplant (Transplant Hepatologist)

We are excited to announce an opportunity for a skilled Transplant Hepatologist to take on the role of Medical Director for Liver Transplantation within our organization. This position offers a unique blend of clinical expertise, leadership in program development, educational responsibilities, and collaborative care within a team-oriented environment. As the Medical Director, you will play a vital role in a nationally recognized transplant center, working closely with national partners to facilitate liver transplant evaluations, optimize candidates, and ensure seamless post-transplant care for our Veterans.

• Veteran-Centered Liver Transplantation:
  • Diagnose and manage a wide range of chronic liver diseases, including hepatitis C, NAFLD/NASH, autoimmune liver disorders, and alcohol-related liver conditions.
  • Coordinate and perform thorough pre- and post-liver transplant evaluations, focusing on medical optimization and ongoing care in collaboration with VA transplant centers.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary transplant boards, working alongside teams in hepatology, surgery, psychology, addiction medicine, pharmacy, and social work.
• Development of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) Optimization Program:
  • Lead the creation and execution of a specialized care pathway for Veterans with alcohol-related liver disease who are being evaluated for transplant.
  • Collaborate with transplant psychologists and addiction specialists to deliver integrated, evidence-based care, including structured behavioral interventions and relapse prevention strategies.
  • Establish comprehensive post-transplant monitoring and support systems tailored to Veterans' needs, coordinating with VA mental health services and community resources.
• Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participate actively in the weekly Tumor Board to assess and discuss complex oncology cases.
  • Attend the weekly Transplant Huddle to synchronize care and align patient management strategies.
  • Lead the Transplant Selection Committee, guiding multidisciplinary decisions regarding transplant candidacy.
  • Engage in the Liver Transplant Multidisciplinary Clinic, collaborating with specialists to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Manage a personal Telehealth Clinic, offering remote consultations and continuity of care for transplant patients.
  • Oversee post-transplant monitoring and long-term care to ensure optimal patient outcomes and address any complications.
  • Review and accept referrals from VA centers nationwide, ensuring timely access to transplant services.
  • Triage clinical calls from referring VA facilities, providing expert guidance on veteran patient care.

• Candidates should be board eligible or certified in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology, with accredited fellowship training in both Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology, as well as proficiency in general GI endoscopy.

• Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

• Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Eligible for up to $200,000 in student loan reimbursement.
• Hiring Incentive: Incentives available for highly qualified candidates.
• Compensation: Competitive salary, annual performance bonuses, and regular salary increases.
• Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off annually, including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and a potential 5-day paid absence for CME.
• Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and a federal 401K with contributions up to 5% by the organization.

• Licensure: Must hold one full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state or territory.
• CME: Possible reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (must be full-time with board certification).

• Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and minimal restrictions on moonlighting.
