NYC Free Tax Prep - Volunteer Tax Preparer As an IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Tax Preparer, you will provide free tax preparation services to New Yorkers across all five boroughs during tax season (January 2027 to April 2027). You will use tax preparation software to complete accurate returns, connect clients to additional financial health resources, and maintain strict confidentiality of client information. Responsibilities Help New Yorkers file their taxes during tax season (January 2027 to April 2027). Use tax preparation software to prepare accurate returns. Connect clients to additional financial health resources, such as NYC Financial Empowerment Centers. Maintain strict confidentiality and safeguard client information. Skills & Qualifications Effective communication and customer service skills. Basic computer literacy. Commitment to serving New Yorkers during the tax season. Willingness to complete free IRS training before the tax season. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed (Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, and others). Training No prior tax experience is required. Volunteers receive hands‑on training and ongoing support to prepare simple tax returns. Volunteers will be required to pass IRS volunteer certification exams to become IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Preparers. Time Commitment Minimum of one 4‑8‑hour shift per week from January 2027 to April 2027. Flexible scheduling: many sites are open seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. Extra shifts are welcome if your schedule allows. Population Served Families, immigrants, refugees or ethnic groups, low‑income communities. Requirements Age minimum: 18+ (adult).
