Aquatics Position

Provide for the safety of spectators, participants, and staff involved in aquatic activities and present aquatic instructional programs. Provide staff support for the office and perform clean-up of pool and locker room areas.

Typical duties include enforcing safety rules, performing lifesaving and first aid procedures, teaching learn to swim programs, providing routine clean-up and maintenance, providing office support, operating a cash register, performing chlorine and pH water tests, completing daily attendance and revenue reports, presenting aquatic instructional programs, preparing daily and monthly lesson plans, evaluating and recommending swim levels, registering students, and performing aquatic instruction at all levels of swimming programs and other special conditioning activities.

Position requirements include being at least 18 years of age, possessing and maintaining certification in Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding, and CPR-PR as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent), obtaining Water Safety Instructor certification within 180 days of hire, demonstrating all lifesaving and first aid skills required by the position, and passing the American Red Cross Swim Proficiency Test. Must be able to swim continuously 150 yards of front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs, and swim 50 more yards. Must be able to within 100 seconds: start in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to 12 ft and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, return to the surface and kick on your back to return to the starting point, holding the brick with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface and exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include six months of experience in aquatic instruction, class preparation, and organization preferred, good communication skills with the ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, tactful, and courteous manner, basic computer skills, ability to operate a point-of-sale computer system, knowledge of Alaska Dept of Environmental Conservation health codes and regulations for pool operations.

Additional information includes ordinary business contact with employees in own division and continuous, routine public contact, does not supervise; performs mostly routine duties with a few minor problems. Little immediate supervision is required; must use own initiative in handling most problems. A recreation facility where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions with minor accident probability; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50 lbs.). This position falls under the Borough's Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
