Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Overview Windhaven Veterinary Hospital offers up to a $1,500 travel stipend for Clinical Year Externships. An externship experience at an NVA hospital allows students to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Every NVA hospital shares a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on exceptional service to animals and their owners. Externship Details Interns work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical examinations, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Students also practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Externship lengths range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Responsibilities Gather patient histories Perform physical examinations Create treatment plans Assist with diagnostics and dentistry services Observe or assist in surgical procedures Manage medical care of patients Communicate with the medical team, support staff, and clients Stipend Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for travel/living expense stipends.
