Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU night shift position requiring ventilator care experience and an active VA or compact RN license.

Details

• Surgical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) setting functioning as stepdown from the General Surgical ICU with bariatric specialty and backup to the trauma unit
• Night shift, 3x12 hours, 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM
• Typical patient ratio of 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4
• Care for chronic trach patients (2 dedicated beds, non-ICU level) requiring CPAP and BiPAP support
• Manage cardiac drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine (no titration)
• Use of equipment including ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach tools, endo tool, PICC line, and MML
• Remote telemetry monitoring with tele sitting support for increased Patient Care Tech coverage
• EPIC charting experience required
• Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block
• Required to work one holiday per 13-week contract
• Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Requirements

• Active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required, unless candidate holds a single-state license from a non-compact state
• Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience, preferably at a hospital with 250+ beds or a larger facility
• Strong post-operative patient care experience required
• Clinical skills in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response
• Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
• Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients required
• Respiratory support skills including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP
• Experience with isolation precautions and PPE
• EPIC charting system experience required
• Two professional references required for consideration

Additional Information

• Provide surgical stepdown-level care including cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia management, and rapid response/code team activation
• Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a large, Magnet-designated, Level I Trauma Center and teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
• First-time travelers will be considered if they have strong post-operative experience, though at least one prior travel assignment is preferred
• All RTO requests must be submitted upfront with the application
• Facility may cancel up to 1 shift per 2-week period
• Local candidates within 100 miles are generally not accepted, though limited exceptions exist for inpatient RNs living 50-99.9 miles away or under 50 miles at a reduced rate for a single 13-week assignment with no extension eligibility
• Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year break before returning as a traveler
• Travelers who have worked 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, with exceptions reviewed case-by-case by facility leadership
