Paramedic

Summary Under supervision of the Medical Director and LifePACT Manager or designee following established policies and procedures, the Paramedic performs patient care, training, equipment use and maintenance, and research efforts. Maintains clinical skills, knowledge of literature in the field, outreach, and training objectives. The position shall not supersede the RN role in patient care once responsibility for a patient is transferred from the paramedic to the RN. Responsibilities Performs non‑invasive patient care alongside the critical care paramedic during transport in accordance with established standards, protocols, and policies under the supervision of the physician medical director or designee. Provides comprehensive, effective and safe non‑invasive care to any patient transported by LifePACT. Assists in the development of patient care protocols and methods. Participates in training curricula and research. Attends required staff and educational meetings and remains current with relevant literature. Assists in writing presentations and papers for publications based on research performed and may present findings at conferences. Completes patient documentation (written and electronic) per Rhode Island Hospital and the Rhode Island Department of Health: Division of EMS, completing it in a timely fashion to expedite patient billing. Performs public education, marketing, and outreach while maintaining a cheerful, positive attitude toward patients, families, coworkers, staff of other facilities, and the public. Maintains a clean operational environment; retrieves, stocks, and cleans medical equipment. Reports to remote location(s) for duty and responds to on‑call emergencies, disasters, and major incidents. Performs data entry and clerical assistance; assists with emergency department communications and dispatch. Minimum Qualifications Current State of Rhode Island EMT‑Paramedic license with a minimum of 1 year of field EMS experience. Current Paramedic certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Current ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications (instructor status preferred). Valid and current driver’s license with a clean driving record. Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Nursing, or a related field preferred. Ability to read, speak, legibly write, and comprehend the English language without restriction. Working knowledge of statistics, verbal and written English communication skills, computer use, and research methodology. Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) certification within one year of employment. Positive communication skills (written and spoken) while interfacing with employees, patients, referring hospitals, and the community. Adherence to LifePACT policies and procedures and safety standards set by Rhode Island Hospital and the Rhode Island Department of Health. Maintenance of clinical skill proficiency and knowledge within scope of practice, including patient assessment, history and physical, intra‑osseous cannulation, medication dosing and administration, airway management (non‑invasive), 12‑lead ECG monitoring and interpretation, and ventilator management. Prepared for unrestricted travel in ambulances, cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, and helicopters. Knowledge and skills to provide care to patients considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns at each step of the care process. Physical Requirements Capable of performing in cramped quarters, any type of weather condition, and other risks including hazardous materials. Ability to run, climb, and carry medical equipment and lift patients; stand erect from a squatting position while lifting 175 pounds between two people. Free of motion sickness or history thereof; free of physical ailments that may impair consciousness or cognitive ability. Ability to stand, walk, run, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, swim, balance, bend, twist, and lift, carry, push/pull 100 lbs or more. Handle, grasp, and perform fine motor skills such as CPR, patient lifting devices, bandaging, intravascular line insertion, and scalpel use. Near and far vision (including corrected) adequate for driving, identifying landmarks, reading, and writing. Hearing: adequate to converse in normal tones, hear equipment sounds and alarms, and use radios and other communication devices. Visual color discrimination for identifying labels, patient assessment, and reading placards. Dynamic strength: climb stairs with equipment and patients; explosive strength: run up stairs, lift, and escape hazards; static strength: carry equipment; stamina: climb flights of stairs, perform CPR for long periods. Experience One year experience in emergency medical care. Work Environment Variable environment, including in‑hospital and out‑of‑hospital emergency care situations that may involve disaster scenarios with exposure to unknown substances or risks, exposure to ill and injured patients, and training environments. Requires travel in vehicles (ambulances, aircraft) and travel to conferences in other areas of the country.
