THE ROLE  

E Ink is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and hands-on Process Engineer to join our Research Division. This individual will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting coatings, lamination, device fabrication, testing, and characterization of novel electrophoretic display systems. 

The Process Engineer will develop, execute, troubleshoot, and optimize laboratory- and pilot-scale processes in research laboratory, pilot laboratory, and cleanroom environments. The individual will plan experiments, analyze process and device-performance data, develop robust procedures, and recommend improvements to process capability, repeatability, yield, and quality. The position combines hands-on experimental work with engineering analysis, equipment ownership, and technical documentation. 

The candidate will be based in Billerica, MA, and will work closely with cross-functional R&D, product, process, and manufacturing teams to translate technical innovations from concept to prototype and ultimately toward commercialization. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Develop, execute, and optimize laboratory- and pilot-scale coating, lamination, and device-fabrication processes. 

• Plan and conduct experiments to evaluate process parameters, materials, equipment settings, and device-build conditions. 

• Analyze and interpret process, characterization, and device-performance data to identify trends and recommend improvements. 

• Investigate process variability, equipment issues, and device defects using structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis. 

• Develop robust and repeatable procedures for multilayer coating, lamination, cutting, assembly, and testing. 

• Take ownership of assigned laboratory and pilot equipment, including operation, maintenance coordination, troubleshooting, and process documentation. 

• Evaluate process capability, repeatability, yield, and quality during experimental builds. 

• Interface with electronic, coating, lamination, mechanical, and process equipment to perform research and fabrication operations. 

• Perform mechanical testing of parts, films, and materials as needed. 

• Organize and maintain parts, materials, tools, and consumables inventory for research and process activities. 

• Prepare work instructions, standard operating procedures, technical reports, and presentations. 

• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and manufacturing teams to define experimental plans and resolve technical issues. 

• Ensure that all work complies with applicable environmental, health, safety, and quality requirements. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related technical discipline, with a minimum of two years of relevant industrial experience; or a master’s degree in one of these disciplines. 

• Demonstrated ability to plan and execute experiments, accurately collect data, analyze results, draw technically sound conclusions, and recommend next steps. 

• Experience developing, executing, or optimizing experimental procedures, fabrication processes, or manufacturing methods. 

• Ability to identify sources of process variation and use structured problem-solving and engineering judgment to troubleshoot equipment, material, and process-related issues. 

• Ability to work independently on assigned technical activities while collaborating effectively with scientists, engineers, technicians, and cross-functional project teams. 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize technical observations, experimental results, conclusions, and recommendations. 

• Demonstrated commitment to laboratory safety and the ability to handle chemical materials in accordance with established environmental, health, safety, and quality requirements. 

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 

 

Preferences:  

• Experience with coating, lamination, multilayer film processing, laser cutting, device assembly, mechanical testing, or device characterization. 

• Experience working in a pilot laboratory, cleanroom, or manufacturing environment. 

• Familiarity with design of experiments, statistical data analysis, process capability, yield analysis, defect analysis, or root-cause investigation. 

• Experience scaling up or transferring processes from laboratory development to pilot or manufacturing operations. 

 

COMPENSATION DISCLOSURE  

At E Ink, we believe in rewarding employees with competitive total compensation through a combination of base salary and performance-based bonuses, with a larger portion of total compensation delivered through our annual bonus program than is typical at many companies. To provide applicants with a more complete picture of our compensation philosophy, we are disclosing both the estimated annual total compensation and the annual base salary range for this position. For this position, the estimated annual total compensation range is $95,000 to $135,000, based on the Company's most recent annual bonus payout. The annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000.

The annual base salary range reflects the Company's good-faith estimate of the base salary it reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of posting. Actual starting base salary is determined based on job-related factors, including experience, skills, education, certifications, and other qualifications. Annual bonus payments are based on Company performance, are not guaranteed, and may be higher or lower than the estimate reflected above.
