Law Clerk - Legal Research & Writing (Part-Time)

Who We Are Looking For We're seeking an experienced Law Clerk with strong legal research and writing skills to support a supervising attorney on litigation matters. This part-time, project-based role is well suited to a current law student seeking substantive, hands-on experience in NewYork civil practice while balancing academic commitments. We also welcome applicants with comparable legal research and writing experience. You will work directly with an experienced attorney who will assign and review all work. At the outset, training will happen case by case. As your understanding of our matters and standards grows, you will take on more autonomy. The ideal candidate is precise, works independently within assigned projects, and makes a genuine effort to find answers through their own research before escalating questions. Every memo, summary, and draft you produce should be clear, well supported, and ready for attorney review. Roles & Responsibilities In this role, you will support the supervising attorney on litigation matters by handling legal research, analysis, and drafting assignments. Legal Research & Analysis Research case law, statutes, and procedural rules, including the NewYork Civil Practice Law and Rules (CPLR), to answer specific legal questions on active matters. Prepare research memoranda and case law summaries that present findings clearly and accurately, with proper citation, including adverse or unsettled authority. Drafting Support Assist in drafting motions, briefs, memoranda of law, and discovery materials for attorney review. Cite-check and proofread drafts for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable court rules. Project Management & Communication Maintain organized, accurate, and up-to-date case files in case management software across all assigned cases, adhering to firm standards for document naming, version control, and storage. Track key documents, outstanding items, and case milestones, logging all follow-up attempts and actions within the case management system. Qualifications At a minimum, candidates should have the following: Demonstrated experience conducting legal research using Westlaw, Lexis, or comparable platforms, gained through law school coursework, legal employment, or similar experience. Experience preparing legal memoranda, case law summaries, or comparable written legal analysis. Strong legal writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, well-organized memoranda and case law summaries. High attention to detail, including accurate citation practice. Ability to manage assigned projects and deadlines independently within a limited, variable weekly schedule. Professionalism, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. The following are preferred but not required: Current enrollment as a second- or third-year student (or equivalent standing in a part-time program) at an ABA-accredited law school. Familiarity with the NewYork CPLR and NewYork civil practice. Coursework or experience in civil litigation, personal injury, or a related practice area. What We Offer Hours: Part-time, with a flexible schedule. Weekly hours may vary based on project needs. Duration: Ongoing, project-based position. Duration will be determined by firm needs.
