Nature of Work

Under the general supervision of the School Principals, the Instrumental Music Teacher develops students' musical abilities through instrumental instruction, music literacy, and performance experiences. The teacher fosters an appreciation of music, encourages creativity and self-expression, and promotes teamwork, discipline, and confidence through individual and ensemble performance opportunities.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Provides supervision of students in educational and performance settings.
  • Plans and deliver daily music instruction aligned to state standards.
  • Keeps daily student attendance and maintains accurate records.
  • Communicates with parents, teachers, administrators, and related service providers as needed.
  • Serves on various teams and committees as assigned.
  • Maintains proper certification through professional development, workshops, and coursework.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and ethical conduct while working cooperatively with all stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
  • Develops and administers instrumental music classes consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Teaches instrumental techniques, music theory, sight-reading, and performance skills appropriate to grade levels.
  • Directs school band programs and prepares students for concerts, performances, festivals, and competitions.
  • Selects appropriate music literature and instructional materials to support student growth and engagement.
  • Provides instruction in proper instrument care, posture, breathing, tone production, and musicianship.
  • Assesses student progress in musical skills and performance, adjusting instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Organizes and conducts rehearsals during and outside the school day as needed for performances.
  • Coordinates and participates in school performances, concerts, assemblies, and community events.
  • Directs the marching band program, including sectional and full-group rehearsals, and attends marching band practices, performances, and events.
  • Collaborates with other music staff and faculty to support school-wide programs.
  • Maintains an organized system for grading, attendance, and performance records.
  • Manages music inventory, instruments, equipment, uniforms, and related materials.
  • Encourages parental and community involvement in music programs.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to create a positive rehearsal and classroom environment.
  • Ensures compliance with school policies and applicable laws.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of instrumental pedagogy, band methods, and music education best practices.
  • Knowledge of music theory, sight-reading, and repertoire selection for secondary students.
  • Knowledge of applicable state standards and educational regulations.
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach proper instrumental performance techniques.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and direct musical performances and events.
  • Ability to assess student performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to use technology for music instruction (e.g., notation software, audio tools, learning platforms).
  • Ability to manage classrooms and rehearsals effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to reflect on and improve instructional practices.
