Laboratory Coordinator
The Laboratory Coordinator shall perform and demonstrate proficiency and understanding in one or more areas of the clinical laboratory, assistance in instructing other personnel as assigned, performs with a perceptive depth of clinical laboratory tests and procedures which require the exercise of independent judgments and responsibility. Maintains the highest degree of quality patient care at all times. This position is also responsible for LIS. This includes but is not limited to system file maintenance and the maintenance of the ongoing laboratory quality assurance program. Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states.
Job Requirements
Minimum Education: Associate's in MLT or Bachelor's in MT Preferred Required Associate's or Bachelor's in Medical Laboratory Science Required
Required Skills
- Certifications: AMLT Certification or Equivalent Required within 1 year of hire ASCP or Equivalent preferred
- Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing.
- Collects samples and analyze bodily fluids and substances for abnormalities.
- Operates laboratory equipment in a high-quality, effective manner.
- Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits, and reports/documents results per organizational standards.
- Performs automated tests using computerized instruments & automated equipment.
- Performs manual tests based on detailed instructions from a physician.
- Runs tests and analyzes the results to be reported to the patient, physician, registered nurse or other licensed person.
- Performs Quality Control work to ensure accuracy of equipment and tests performed.
- Assist Lab Assistants as needed.
- Analyze samples used for transfusions.
- Collects specimens, including blood from patients.
- Completes annual competencies in a timely manner.
- Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Maintains Supplies.
- Reports critical values in a timely manner.
- Observes professional ethics in maintaining confidential information regarding the financial, personal, medical or employment status of patient/families.
- Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and hospitals.
- Must report safety hazards and initiate appropriate action.
- Must participate in safety instructional programs.
- Maintains compliance with CAP, State, Federal and other regulatory and accrediting agency standards related to job duties.
- Demonstrates professional and independent judgment at all times.
- Assists with Performance Improvement activities in the department and serves on teams as needed.
- Acts as a liaison between LIS and HIS.
- Trains and educates all laboratory personnel on LIS.
- Provides technical support in solving procedural problems.
- Presents appropriate in-service lectures to laboratory and other professional staff.
