Job Description

The Engineering Technician provides hands-on support to the engineering team for manufacturing processes and equipment in an assigned area. This role focuses on troubleshooting machining lines, optimizing tooling and machine setups, resolving quality issues, and supporting the installation and qualification of new or re-tooled product lines. The Engineering Technician actively monitors daily production processes, performs root cause analysis on quality and availability issues, and implements engineering solutions to keep production operating at its full potential.

Responsibilities

• Support the engineering team in maintaining and improving manufacturing processes and equipment in the assigned area.
• Troubleshoot machining lines, including tooling issues, machine setup, and investigation of quality issues related to machining processes.
• Assist with planning, installation, and commissioning of machinery and equipment for new or re-tooled product lines.
• Perform daily monitoring of manufacturing processes and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality and availability targets.
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement countermeasures for manufacturing quality and equipment availability issues.
• Provide line support to repair and improve machines and manufacturing processes to ensure production operates at full potential.
• Trend, analyze, and report on current quality and availability data for the assigned area.
• Assist with special manufacturing or engineering projects as needed to support operational and strategic objectives.
• Modify CNC G-code programs to improve process performance, quality, or efficiency.
• Modify robot programs to optimize automation performance and support production requirements.
• Assist engineers in the installation, debug, and qualification of new equipment, including trial runs and performance verification.
• Participate in team activities and continuous improvement initiatives to help achieve company objectives.
• Provide technical support for maintenance, production, and quality teams, including troubleshooting and problem resolution.
• Adjust actions in relation to others’ actions to coordinate work effectively and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions, draw conclusions, and determine the best approaches to technical problems.
• Assist engineers in monitoring trials, measuring parts, and making process adjustments based on results.
• Perform setups for new projects, including tooling, offsets, and program verification.
• Create and maintain documentation related to processes, adjustments, trials, and equipment changes.
• Act as a technical “first responder” to machine breakdowns, confirming repairs made by maintenance and investigating root causes of failures.

Essential Skills

• Five years of CNC machining experience in a production environment.
• Five years of manufacturing experience in high-volume production.
• Strong CNC programming and troubleshooting skills, including modifying CNC G-code programs.
• CNC experience with lathes and mills, including Okuma, Roda, and Mazak mill machining centers, Fanuc RoboDrills, and Fanuc controls.
• Experience working in a high-production, robotics-intensive environment.
• Ability to make adjustment offsets, tool changes, and other fine-tuning adjustments on CNC equipment.
• Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, 3 Pillar, and standards and techniques for maximizing quality and availability.
• General knowledge of machines and tools, measurement instruments, automation and robotics, and maintenance and repair practices.
• Basic knowledge of mathematics to understand complex instructions, interpret schematics, and ensure items are produced to specific specifications.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings in both standard and metric measurements.
• Ability to create sketches of parts or components to be machined.
• Proficiency with Fusion 360 and Autodesk software packages.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, particularly Excel.
• Strong logical and analytical reasoning skills for problem-solving and evaluating alternative solutions.
• Ability to coordinate actions with others and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation of processes, changes, and trial results.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience assisting engineers with equipment trials, part measurement, and process adjustments.
• Experience setting up machines and processes for new projects and product introductions.
• Ability to document technical findings, process changes, and equipment performance in a clear and organized manner.
• Experience acting as a technical resource during machine breakdowns, confirming repairs, and investigating root causes.
• Comfort working in a structured manufacturing environment with established quality and performance standards.

Work Environment

This role is based in a high-volume manufacturing facility with CNC machining lines, robotic automation, and modern equipment such as Okuma, Roda, and Mazak mill machining centers, Fanuc RoboDrills, and Fanuc controls. Work is performed on A Shift (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM) or on a rotating schedule between A Shift (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM) and B Shift (4:00 PM – 12:30 AM), with training provided on the day shift. The environment is fast-paced and production-driven, requiring attention to safety, quality, and equipment reliability. You will regularly interact with engineering, maintenance, production, and quality teams, using tools such as Fusion 360, Autodesk software, and Microsoft Excel to support analysis, programming, and documentation. Appropriate industrial work attire and adherence to facility safety and operational procedures are expected.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Durham, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
