Opportunity
Police Officers are responsible for maintaining public order and protecting life and property by responding to emergencies, investigating crimes, apprehending criminals and deterring criminal activity in a manner that will foster public confidence and respect. Schedule subject to a two-week shift schedule that alternates between a three-day work week and four-day work week. Standard shifts are twelve hours but altered to result in eighty hours total worked during a two-week pay period. Work hours include weekend, night and holiday shifts. Salary this position is non-exempt, eligible for OT. Current salary range: $42.40-$57.07/hour. Anticipated starting salary: $42.40-$45.91/hour. Union representation this position is represented by Minnesota Public Employees Association. Wages, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement. - Respond to critical emergencies and other calls for services to protect life and property, prevent crime and enforce laws.
- Investigate all levels of crime to develop facts in a case to prove or disprove who is responsible for committing crimes.
- Formulate police reports based off evidence and facts established in a case and recommend criminal charges to attorneys when necessary.
- Develop and implement split second decisions utilizing trained tactics to control dangerous, unpredictable and hazardous situations.
- Collaborate with local, state and federal agencies, attorneys, judges and other first responders to prosecute crime.
- Communicate with a diverse range of community members, support community engagements and work to strengthen relationships between police and community.
- Participate in department training plans from a vast array of topics including use of force, firearms, drone operations, etc.
- Assist other departments and employees as necessary.
- Participates in public education demonstrations, expositions, presentations and community events.
- Possesses outstanding communication, organizational and general presentation skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements:
- Associate's degree in law enforcement or related field.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure through the Minnesota POST Board by date of hire. Lateral applicants currently certified in other states are encouraged to apply and may qualify through reciprocity.
- Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license and driving record that meets City and/or department standards to perform required job-related travel.
Skills and experience that elevate your success (not required but helpful):
- Bachelor's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency management, or related field.
- Experience working in law enforcement in a sworn or non-sworn capacity.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and one or more additional languages.

Working Conditions
Physical: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully and safely perform the essential duties of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. This role involves a wide range of physical activities: Required to drive a vehicle, walk, communicate clearly and effectively, hear, stand, frequently sit, use hands to handle or feel, firmly grasp, reach with hands and arms, push, pull, twist, lift, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and perform repetitive motions. Candidates must be able to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally lift or drag 100 pounds or more. The position also requires visual acuity, including close-up vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the position involves frequent interruptions and may require extended periods of typing and report writing.
Environmental: The job is performed primarily in the field and includes driving or riding in a vehicle. Employees must carry a firearm and respond appropriately to potentially dangerous situations. There is potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, injuries, emotional and visual trauma, traffic accidents, and interactions with angry or violent individuals. Safety precautions, including wearing protective clothing and equipment, are essential. Employees must be able to hear verbal commands and see visual signals clearly.
