Registered Nurse (PCU)

The PCU is a stepdown unit from the ICU. It operates with a 3:1 nurse-patient ratio for closer monitoring of patients who do not quite meet tele level of care. Registered Nurses should have experience in an ICU stepdown or PCU unit. Training includes telemetry and high-risk medications. Common patient diagnoses include stepdown patients from ICU, TBI/trauma patients, major surgeries, CEA, and sepsis. RNs are required to titrate drips, including Precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, and levophed. There is typically one aid for all 14 beds. Shifts are 12 hours, starting at 6:45 AM or PM, with three shifts per week. Schedules are initially created 2-3 weeks in advance and typically extended out 9 weeks. Self-scheduling is generally allowed. Weekend requirements include four weekend shifts within a four-week schedule. There are no call or standby requirements. Travelers are expected to float to telemetry or med-surg as needed. Scrub color is navy blue. Unit specific orientation is provided for one shift. Candidates must have 2-3 years of experience in the specialty. New travelers are welcomed. The unit is very busy with quick turnovers. Patient experience is a priority, with emphasis on HCAHPS and core measures. The team values self-motivated and team-oriented individuals. The environment is traveler-friendly and promotes effective teamwork. Cancellation policy allows for up to four shifts to be canceled during a 13-week assignment. Charting is done through the Cerner system.
