Plant Technician- Instrument & Electrical

Job Posting Details Talen Energy is looking for candidates to fill an opening for Plant Technician–E&C. This position would be located at the Talen Energy H.A. Wagner power plant facility in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). We are looking for qualified candidates with electrical work experience, including over five years related work experience in the areas of evaluation and testing of generating plant and substation power equipment, or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience. The H.A. Wagner Plant consists of natural gas and oil‑fired units. The position reports to the Production Supervisor. The expected salary range for this position is $95,000 to $115,000 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job‑related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s short‑term incentive program. Primary Purpose & Summary (Electrical) Performs tests on new and in‑service equipment such as DCS, instrumentation, PLCs, cables, power transformers, circuit breakers, and motors. Performs troubleshooting, testing, repairing, and maintenance on a variety of electrical equipment and controls for power plant equipment, both AC and DC, with voltages ranging from 115 V up to 230 kV. Troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on plant continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) analyzers, programmable logic controllers, and data acquisition hardware. Uses a variety of testing equipment and instrumentation to calibrate, test, and repair CEM system hardware, keeps abreast of federal and state requirements, develops preventive maintenance procedures, identifies spare parts, and prepares and maintains appropriate test results and reports as required. Supports system quarterly and yearly audits. Responsibilities (Electrical) Inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical equipment utilizing a variety of test equipment and tools. Performs controls troubleshooting and preventive maintenance. Performs high‑voltage switching of circuit breakers and transformers, lock‑out/tag‑out of electrical equipment in accordance with company policies and procedures, and works with AC and DC electrical equipment in compliance with NFPA 70E. Ensures equipment maintenance schedules are adhered to and any malfunctions are reported, documented, and addressed. Will be subject to rotating shift work, holiday and weekend work in addition to short overtime notice. Skills & Competencies (Electrical) Proficient at reading and understanding electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and one‑line drawings. Uses test equipment such as voltage testers, insulation resistance testers, ammeters, phase meters, and process meters. General knowledge of electrical theory and operation of programmable logic control (PLC). Has a working knowledge of motors, transformers, relays, breakers, switches, and solenoids. Performs modifications and additions of plant equipment by bending conduit, running cable, and terminating connections. Inputs data into a work management system (Maximo) and Cornerstone Database. Analyzes situations accurately and adopts an effective course of action. Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicates effectively across all levels. Responds to unplanned call‑ins, weekend work, and work schedule changes. Education & Experience Required (Electrical) Satisfactory completion of post‑high school courses in AC and DC electrical theory/equipment applications and over five years related work experience (e.g., evaluation and testing of generating plant and substation power equipment) or equivalent formal education/training and experience. Experience with computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and report preparation. Working knowledge of mathematics up to trigonometry and ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and drawings. Knowledge and application of safety procedures and practices involving high‑voltage equipment. Demonstrated reliability, responsibility, and the ability to make quick and effective technical decisions. Four years of experience with plant continuous emissions monitoring hardware/software or equivalent, or four years of experience with plant distributed data acquisition and control systems. Licenses & Certifications Required Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards. Able to qualify for a TWIC card. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer. Requires stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long periods. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. May be required to respond to environmental release situations. Physical & Mental Demands Represents the physical demands required to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. At the power plant facility and in/outdoor environment, must work in adverse conditions including climbing stairs, ladders, and working on elevated platforms; stand for long periods; lift 45 lb overhead and 75 lb from the floor to 36 in.; be willing to travel to other facilities if needed; meet vision requirements such as close vision, distance vision, color distinction, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjust focus; work around high voltage; have manual dexterity; wear respirators in dusty environments; use fall protection as required; and satisfy medical examination for emergency response team duties including confined space rescue, HazMat operations, and incipient fire brigade activities. Mental Demands Regular use of written and oral communication skills, reading and interpreting data and documents; analysis and problem solving; observation and interpretation of situations; use of math and mathematical reasoning; dealing with changing deadlines; and interacting with internal and external clients. Requires concentration under time constraints. Work Environment The work environment includes outside weather conditions, wet or humid environments, proximity to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, electrical shock risk, vibration, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures, confined spaces, external environmental conditions such as cold, heat, dust, snow, noise, and fumes. Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
