Job Summary, Duties & Responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY Under the general direction of assigned Fire Captain, participates in all phases of emergency operations to protect life and property through fire suppression and fire prevention activities; provide advanced life support care and transportation of the sick and injured. Maintain fire apparatus and equipment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Job duties and responsibilities as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the typical tasks performed. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed.
- Responds to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, and other emergency situations
- Provides emergency medical treatment to sick and injured persons, communicates with on-line medical control and provides treatment as directed. Performs physical lifting techniques associated with moving patients between incident site, stretcher or ambulance
- Provides protection of life/property; suppresses, controls and extinguishes fires; performs search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assists individuals from burning structures; ventilates smoke and gas from buildings; establishes openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris; assists with cleanup activities;
- Operates the EMS apparatus safely transporting personnel and patients
- Performs fire prevention inspections
- Prepares, completes, and reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, ledgers, incident reports, fire/EMS reports, run sheets, patient records, inspection reports, maintenance records, or other documents
- Maintains EMS apparatus, equipment, and supplies including ALS drugs and narcotics
- Assists in the inspection, maintenance, and cleanliness of EMS and Fire apparatus, equipment, tools, supplies including ALS drugs and narcotics, hydrants, and grounds and all other Fire Department property to ensure proper operating condition; including performing minor repair and clean up
- Participate in and presents educational and public relations programs to the community on safety, fire prevention and other topics
- Participates in continuing education activities, drills, demonstrations, and classes
- Performs collateral assignments such as information systems support, vehicle repair and maintenance, administration, training, or supplies
- Performs related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Must be 21 years of age at time of application
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Fire Suppression is required
- Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification is required
- At time of appointment, a Texas Motor Vehicle Class C Operator's License with a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to obtain within the first year of employment a Texas Motor Vehicle Class B Operator's License maintained throughout employment
- National, state, and local laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and fire/safety codes.
- Fire protection systems, water supply, building construction, direct fire and rescue operations, disasters, fire control and extinguishment of combustible and flammable materials.
- Incident Command System, arson investigation and hazardous materials.
- Firefighting/rescue techniques, fire inspection, patient care, fire prevention.
- Hydraulics, pump operation/maintenance, and equipment maintenance.
- Computer, calculator, copier, fax machine and two-way radio, camera and measuring devices.
- Power tools, hand tools, chain saws, shovels, brooms, ladders, exhaust fans and generators.
- Patient restraints, first aid equipment, oxygen, electronics test equipment, general medical equipment and patient lifting devices.
- Analyze options and make sound decisions including while under pressure or in a dangerous situation within policy limits.
- Operate an EMS apparatus.
- Learn, interpret, apply, and adhere to Town and Department rules, regulations, procedures, and routines.
- Mathematics skills including addition and subtraction.
- Operate standard office equipment and computer terminal.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Work Environment
Work is performed traveling between various sites and working under challenging conditions. Incumbents may be exposed to severe physical hazards including extreme weather, intense heat, structural collapses, and potential electrocution. Duties may involve dealing with fire environments, working at heights or in confined spaces, and handling hazardous materials like chemicals and explosives. Frequently encounter noisy environments, slippery surfaces, and traffic hazards. Physical demands are high, requiring heavy lifting and carrying, up to 100 lbs, bending, climbing, and prolonged periods of standing or moving. Exposure to hazardous conditions such as fumes, dust, and infectious materials. Safety gear is mandatory, and adherence to strict safety regulations is essential. When not on emergency calls, you'll work in more controlled settings like the office or Fire station.
