To perform technical and skilled mechanical maintenance work in support of the operation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and equipment related to the wastewater treatment plant. Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs journey level mechanical maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heavy duty and specialized equipment in the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Work involves responsibility for maintaining and repairing a variety of pumps and motors and other equipment requiring specialized knowledge of trade skills in mechanical and plumbing areas. May assist with Pretreatment program and assist with lab duties in absence of Laboratory Analyst. Position may be designated as the primary back-up ORC at the discretion of the Wastewater Treatment Plan Superintendent, and in accordance with NCDENR and DWR regulations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Wastewater Plant Superintendent and is evaluated on the basis of ensuring equipment operates within given time schedules and overall effectiveness of system performance.
Illustrative Examples of Work
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring or testing devices, assembly of equipment, operating plant equipment, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work performed, and observing surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions
Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and extreme cold. Employee is subject to noise, vibration, and hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, and atmospheric conditions. Employee is exposed to oils and greases, sewage flows and sludge, bacteria, and blood-borne pathogens. Employee is required to wear a respirator when necessary. Employee may frequently work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens.
Education
Graduation from high school or equivalency supplemented by courses in mechanical or plumbing trades; preference is for a technical school training or Associate's degree in mechanical trades and pump repairs. Experience

Illustrative Examples of Work
- Maintains pumps, motors and gear boxes at the Wastewater Treatment Plant; changes oil, greases motors, and pumps and chains
- Maintains the grounds by mowing, weed eating, spraying herbicides, edge sidewalks; maintains mowers
- Operates plant when operator is absent; makes rounds, collects samples, completes required reports
- Assists in pretreatment sampling of industries and inspection of collection systems
- Plans and participates in regular preventive maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings, gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, packing pumps and other preventive maintenance activities
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs parts or equipment; re-builds rotating assemblies and air release valves; cleans out check valves; re-builds and changes out pumps
- Rebuilds and overhauls defective parts and machinery, instrumentation and equipment.
- Dismantles and overhauls various equipment; cleans, replaces and repairs gauges, engines, and other equipment
- Performs on-call and fill in duties as needed for other positions within the plant
- Use of department's software programs as related to division's tasks.
- Orders and obtains needed parts and supplies
- Performs related duties as required
- Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant including OSHA requirements
- Knowledge of pump and motor parts and ability to diagnose and replace parts
- Knowledge of the various chemicals and additives applied to wastewater to ensure compliance with federal and state treatment regulations
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations affecting wastewater treatment operations
- Knowledge of effective communication techniques when speaking with coworkers, vendors, and the public
- Ability to detect malfunctioning of pumps and motors by observation, sound, and chart readings, and to take proper remedial action
- Ability to read and follow schematic drawings, blueprints, and written and oral instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors
- Ability to be called back to work on weekends, holidays, and emergencies
- Ability to run basic laboratory tests
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and prepare reports
- Ability to make operational decisions in the absence of a superintendent
- Ability to detect and resolve routine operational problems with mechanical equipment
