World Models Researcher

Company Description Helm AI builds a flight simulator for strategic decision making, enabling organizations to explore complex futures through agentic simulations. These simulations model population-scale human behavior as chain reactions, showing how customer choices, corporate actions, and regulatory changes propagate through networks. Helm AI’s technology captures cascading reactions at every level, helping decision-makers understand second- and third-order effects before they occur. The team combines advancements in AI, modeling, and behavioral science to provide tools for more informed and resilient strategic planning.
Role Description The World Models Researcher will design, implement, and validate large-scale world models that capture human, organizational, and regulatory dynamics in Helm AI’s simulation platform. Daily work includes developing novel modeling architectures, running experiments, analyzing emergent behavior, and iterating on model assumptions to better reflect real-world systems. The role involves collaborating closely with engineering and product teams to integrate research prototypes into production, as well as working with domain experts to calibrate models and evaluate their realism and usefulness. This is a full-time, on-site position based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Qualifications

Qualifications
- Strong foundation in machine learning and AI, including experience with probabilistic modeling, reinforcement learning, or generative models.
- Background in simulation, complex systems, or computational modeling of social, economic, or organizational behavior.
- Proficiency in Python and common ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX), with ability to write clean, production-quality research code.
- Experience designing and running empirical studies, including experimental setup, evaluation metrics, and statistical analysis.
- Ability to translate qualitative domain knowledge into quantitative model assumptions and interpretable parameters.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with comfort working on ambiguous, open-ended research problems.
- Effective collaboration and communication skills for working with interdisciplinary teams, including engineers, product leaders, and domain experts.
- Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in computer science, applied mathematics, physics, economics, computational social science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience with large-scale computing environments and tools (e.g., distributed training, cloud infrastructure, experiment management) is a plus.
- Interest in strategic decision making, systems thinking, and real-world applications of AI to complex societal and economic challenges.
