You will provide support for the department engineers by performing calculations, information gathering and record keeping. You will perform asset management functions for pavements, culverts, structures, and other transportation assets.This position is represented by Local 17, Professional and Technical Employees.QualificationsEducation and Experience:An AS in Engineering Technology (or equivalent experience) and 2-3 years experience in a position equivalent to Assistant Engineering Technician i.e. construction inspection, civil engineering role. A Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or related field may be substituted for the required experience.Knowledge of: Basic engineering principles, practices, the techniques and equipment involved, physical and mathematical sciences, basic construction practices and safety requirements.Ability to: Interpret construction plans and specifications, use a personal computer, interact with the public and/or contractors, operate basic surveying and test equipment, and perform technical research work on routine engineering problems.Selection Process:Resume and other documents must be attached together in the 'Resume Upload' section of the application. This recruitment may close at any time on or after the first review date with no additional notice.Examples of DutiesMust have valid driver's license at time of hire.Duties may include but are not limited to the following:Performs inspections of pavements, culverts, miscellaneous structures, unstable slopes, and other assetsInspects construction work on pavement preservation projectsRecords inspection data electronicallyPerforms non-destructive structural testing of pavement using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) equipmentOperates Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and pavement coring equipment to investigate pavement layer information.Identifies and marks out areas of pavement needing repairMeasures repair areas and calculates total quantities for bid item estimatesIdentifies and develops preservation treatment projects and bid documentsMonitors performance of past preservation treatment projectsWorks with the GIS Department to produce maps of upcoming project workCommunicates with the public concerning road conditions and upcoming workUses personal computers and software applications including Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and AccessUses database software including PAVER and mapping software, including GIS, Google Earth and GIS-Mo/VUEWorksIs safety conscious - ensuring the safety of self and co-workersTeam player attitude - coordinates with co-workers to accomplish tasksResponds to inquiries and complaints from property owners, businesses, and the general public regarding engineering projectsReviews project plans and archives data from projectsCollects and maintains base data for engineering studiesPerforms research activities in County and State recordsRead and interpret plans and specifications to ensure that projects are built to contract standardsOther duties as assignedWORKING CONDITIONSIncumbents are required to work both in an office setting and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather conditions, construction sites, moving traffic , and heavy equipment. Much of the field work involves sitting in a vehicle or walking for hours at a time. Subject to working long hours, weekends, and evenings.Essential tasks include use of the telephone, personal computers, office equipment, writing, driving a county or personal vehicle to travel to various work sites. Must be able to effectively communicate to a wide variety of individuals both formally and informally to include over-the phone and face-to-face exchanges. Must be able to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
