As a utility worker you will inspect, maintain, and replace control devices, such as gate valves and hydrants on water mains throughout the distribution system as well as perform a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant, facilities, grounds, and equipment.Key AccountabilitiesOperates, maintains, and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate operation of pump stationsMonitors the water production facilities and distribution/collection system and make adjustments as necessary to control their operation and maintain compliance with regulationsPerforms water quality sampling, testing and analysis to determine compliance with federal, state and VAWC's standardsFeeds specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, potassium permanganate and corrosion inhibitor into water supply and/or adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into water to disinfect and otherwise treat waterDocuments chemical feed activities and system performance with written reports and automatic charts. Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water pressure, power consumption, water output, and chemical consumptionMonitors panel board(s) and adjust controls to regulate flow rates and water storage and distribution of waterRepairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power toolsMaintains pipe systems, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, electrical conduit and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipmentTurns valves, pulls levers, and flips switches to operate and control motor driven pumpsReads and adjust flow-meters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand. Inspects equipment to detect malfunctions, such as pump leaks or worn bearingMaintains facility buildings and grounds at appropriate appearance standards to include general housekeeping such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, etc. Cleans basins. Digs ditches either by hand or using small backhoe. Operates electric hoist. Determines action to be taken in the event of an emergency, such as, but not limited to, machine, equipment, or power failure.
