Department Manager

Job Summary

The Department Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day operations of their assigned department, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, profitably, and in alignment with company and customer expectations.

This role provides leadership across staffing, project execution, financial performance, resource planning, quality, safety, and customer relationships. The Department Manager is responsible for developing their team, improving operational processes, and ensuring department goals and customer delivery objectives are consistently achieved.

Location and Travel

The Department Manager will oversee the Texas market. This is a remote role, with approximately one week of travel within Texas each month. Candidates based in Dallas or San Antonio are preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, supervise, and direct the day-to-day activities and overall performance of the assigned department.
• Recruit, hire, train, develop, and manage department personnel in accordance with company policies and procedures.
• Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback while making recommendations related to promotions, compensation, corrective action, and employee development.
• Manage staffing levels, workload distribution, and resource allocation to support project schedules and customer requirements.
• Plan, monitor, and manage department and project financial performance, including labor, costs, budgets, and profitability.
• Oversee project scopes that may include structured cabling, audio-visual (AV), security, life safety, estimating, and Building Information Modeling (BIM).
• Participate in and/or lead estimating, proposal, and bid activities to support new and existing business opportunities.
• Monitor project execution to ensure work meets company standards for quality, safety, productivity, and customer delivery.
• Serve as a key company liaison with customer representatives, maintaining strong relationships and addressing operational needs, concerns, and expectations.
• Identify opportunities to improve department and account processes and develop and implement solutions that increase efficiency, consistency, and overall performance.
• Partner with internal teams and leadership to resolve operational challenges and support department and company objectives.
• Promote a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and applicable project requirements.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to work independently, maintain a positive and professional approach, and lead teams through operational and process improvements.

• Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, written communication, and verbal presentation skills.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply project documentation, including blueprints, specifications, reports, and quality requirements.
• Ability to travel within the branch and/or regional territory as business needs require.
• Ability to learn and effectively use Company and customer project management systems.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Company-sponsored American Express card.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Education, Experience, and Skills

• High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
• Minimum of seven (7) years of supervisory or management experience.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in telecommunications, construction, or a related technical field.
• Demonstrated experience serving as a primary customer contact or liaison between customers and internal teams.
• Proven ability to define project requirements, develop scopes of work, establish detailed project tasks, and manage projects through successful completion and customer turnover.
• Experience managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multiple direct reports, including exempt and non-exempt employees.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Microsoft Project.
• Must meet Company driving requirements and maintain eligibility to operate a Company vehicle, as applicable.
