About the Department DPS is one of the largest campus public safety departments in the United States, comprising over 300 dedicated full‑time employees. Role Overview In this important role you will monitor closed‑circuit television systems (CCTV), vehicle tracking technology, access control systems, as well as fire, life and intrusion alarms to assist the Department of Public Safety in protecting the property at the University Park Campus, Health Sciences Campus, University Village, and USC off‑site locations. You will initiate emergency and non‑emergency response of department personnel via radio communications or telephone. The position serves as a vital link between Public Safety personnel and all other emergency and non‑emergency services available in the university community. Key Responsibilities Conduct CCTV monitoring and surveillance of public areas for security purposes. Respond to Public Safety personnel requests to observe and track criminal or suspicious activity during active investigations. Monitor access control systems, fire, life and intrusion alarms via multiple computer systems and programs. Document records of all incidents and actions taken in Computer Aided Dispatch system and SharePoint. Write and prepare daily logs and reports. Extract appropriate evidential records (video and photograph) from security systems for investigative cases. Liaise with Public Safety personnel, Los Angeles Police Department, and other agencies to ensure appropriate use of the security systems during investigations. Testify in court as a subject matter expert and representative of the Department of Public Safety. Observe and identify individuals involved in criminal or suspicious activity on university property or in the surrounding community. Assist Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies in investigating criminal or suspicious activity. Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and mandatory reporter under the Clery Act. Receive reports of crimes or criminal incidents from victims or third parties, notify the Department of Public Safety immediately of serious crime, and notify the Clery Compliance Coordinator. In the event of an emergency, report to duty in accordance with the university’s Emergency Operations Plan and/or the employee’s department emergency response and recovery plans. Work shifts that include holidays, weekends, overtime, and special events as required. Minimum Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: 2 years in a related field. Field of expertise: Knowledge of Closed‑Circuit Television systems (CCTV) and alarm monitoring; standard methods, technology and procedures for video surveillance; working knowledge of computer systems and programs; excellent hand‑to‑eye coordination and computer skills; ability to operate computer‑assisted communications equipment; ability to work under pressure and exercise good judgment in emergency conditions; clear and concise oral and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree. Experience: 3 years in a related role with previous operator experience in CCTV, license plate recognition programs, access control systems, and alarm monitoring programs. Field of expertise: Ability to understand and embrace current and future technologies to enhance communications center operations. Valid California driver’s license. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System; a copy of the DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment. Hourly Range $22.03 per hour.
