Senior Systems Administrator

Job Description This Senior Systems Administrator position is responsible for maintaining IT infrastructure to support Virginia Tech sites in Alexandria and Arlington. It includes system support, security monitoring, and virtualization, and will involve modifying or replacing components as needed with team assistance. Technologies employed include Windows Active Directory, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Hyper‑V, ProxMox, Bigfix, Jamf, and Veritas Backup Exec. The role provides higher‑level support for the service desk, guides team members, and serves as a backup when required. It manages and coordinates activities in the VTRC‑Arlington machine room, consulting with stakeholders on server installations and best practices, and may require after‑hours work during emergencies. Other responsibilities include working with the University’s Network Infrastructure and Services team to identify and troubleshoot network issues, activate network ports, and install new equipment when required. Required Qualifications Master’s degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and progressive experience. Significant experience managing mission‑critical IT infrastructure (servers, workstations, cloud services). Experience managing Windows Active Directory or similar environment. Experience managing Linux servers via SSH and command line. Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, BASH, and/or PowerShell. Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking as it applies to computer endpoints. Demonstrated technical communication and writing skills. Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and projects. Preferred Qualifications Certifications in client, server, or cloud technologies (CompTIA, Microsoft, AWS, etc.). Experience with iSCSI in a shared environment. Experience providing IT solutions in higher education. Experience managing and securing computers with public‑facing IP addresses. Experience with IPv6. Job Information Location: Alexandria, VA & Arlington, VA. Appointment type: Regular. Salary: $91,000 – $96,000. Hours per week: 40. Review date: 7/27/2026. Exempt: Not eligible for overtime.
