Registered Nurse RN-Specialty Surgery

Summary The registered nurse will perform direct patient/resident care and delegation to patient care technicians, providing care and comfort to patients. Knowledge and compliance with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines relating to facility care will be maintained. This position requires basic medical/surgical knowledge to care for general surgical and orthopedic surgical patients and interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels. Responsibilities (30%) Regularly assess patients/clients needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care, and accepted standards of nursing practice. (30%) Provide direct patient care, including medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, etc. (20%) Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plan and make suggestions or participate in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care. (10%) Process physician/provider orders and perform physician ordered care accurately, completely and in a timely manner. (10%) Follow up regarding medication changes and order clarifications. Other Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrate the ability to interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information. Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural/spiritual variables. Provide education to meet the individual needs and ability to learn. Participate in care conferences as assigned. Develop and maintain good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet the needs of each patient. Coordinate care provided by patient care technicians. Organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient. Manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit. Instruct other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care. Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Use clinical pathways appropriately. Remain calm and efficient when working in stressful situations. Document in an accurate, clear, and concise way and include pertinent clinical data. Share information and report significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members. Participate in regulatory surveys. Participate in performance improvement activities. Assist with orientation and ongoing competencies. Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care. Attend and participate in professional association activities and programs to remain current on regulations, guidelines, and professional standards. Stay current on new developments by reading professional journals and attending seminars. Demonstrate understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures. Insert and care for nasogastric, feeding, and other tubes as ordered, following proper procedure. Insert and care for intravenous lines and monitor central venous pressure (CVP) as ordered. Set up, instruct, and monitor use of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). Obtain doppler pulses following proper procedure. Provide routine care of gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes according to procedure and physician orders. Assist in heparin therapy protocol per procedures. Apply basic traction, splints, braces, and continuous passive motion (CPM) machines following procedure and physician order. Cut and trim casts, remove wound drains as ordered. Maintain total hip and total knee precaution measures and instruct patients. Monitor and initiate safety measures to prevent patient injury. Certifications and Licensures RN: Registered Nurse BLS: Basic Life Support TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt DIMC: Dysrhythmia Interpretation Man Education Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience, Training and Skills Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels. Competency in Microsoft Windows. Ability to learn and adapt to technology-driven environments. Physical / Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief and death. Must wear personal protective equipment, move freely within the facility with or without an assisted device, and perform job functions described. Vision and hearing required. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks. May lift or carry up to 50 lbs. on occasional basis. Must follow bloodborne pathogen and tuberculosis testing protocols.
