Job Description

The Ophthalmic Technician supports a busy retina clinic by preparing patients for their visits, accurately documenting clinical encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR), and ensuring a smooth, efficient flow of care in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. This role combines direct patient interaction, detailed medical documentation, and close collaboration with physicians and clinical staff, offering strong opportunities for professional growth and exposure to advanced ophthalmology and clinical research.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for their visits by gathering and recording vital signs, medical history, and family history in the EMR system.

• Update and maintain accurate patient information in the EMR, ensuring all data is complete, current, and correctly entered.

• Document physician-patient encounters in real time as a medical scribe within the EMR system, capturing assessments, plans, and clinical details with high accuracy.

• Perform patient workups after doctor visits, following established clinical protocols and physician instructions.

• Communicate clearly with patients based on the physician's documented plan, reinforcing instructions and answering questions within the scope of the role.

• Support high-volume patient care, contributing to the efficient movement of 80-100 patients per day through the clinic.

• Collaborate with a team of clinic staff and physicians to maintain an organized, fast-paced clinical environment.

• Handle data entry and medical documentation tasks with strong attention to detail and confidentiality.

• Adapt to working across multiple clinic locations within an assigned group of clinics, as needed, while maintaining consistent quality of care.

• Participate in training and ongoing education to stay current with clinic protocols, EMR updates, and best practices in ophthalmic and medical assisting support.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related health science field, OR at least 1 year of experience in the medical field.

• A minimum of 1 year of on-site scribing or closely related medical experience.

• Hands-on experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including accurate and timely data entry.

• Knowledge of medical terminology, particularly as it relates to patient histories, vital signs, and clinical documentation.

• Experience providing direct patient care or patient-facing support in a healthcare setting.

• Ability to work effectively in a high-volume clinical environment, supporting 80-100 patients per day.

• Strong typing and data entry skills with high accuracy and attention to detail.

• Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced setting while maintaining professionalism and quality of work.

• Driven, and self-motivated approach to daily responsibilities.

• Excellent communication skills for interacting with patients and clinical team members.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Interest in ophthalmology or retina care.

• Previous experience in medical assisting, health care support, or medical documentation roles.

• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced clinical environment with a high volume of patient interactions.

• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, patient encounters, and documentation requirements throughout the day.

• Proactive, "Type A" personality with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for patient care and documentation quality.

Work Environment

This role is based in a very fast-paced retina clinic environment that regularly sees 80-100 patients per day. The schedule follows a Monday-Friday structure, with clinic hours generally falling between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.; individual shifts are scheduled within this window based on clinic needs, and it is rare to start at the earliest time or work until the latest time except during particularly busy periods. Initial training takes place at an administrative building, after which the technician works primarily at a designated home clinic, one of the busiest locations in the area, while also supporting up to two additional assigned clinics as needed. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance, and on rare occasions the technician may be asked to support a clinic outside of their usual three locations, with mileage reimbursed for travel to those additional sites. The technician works as part of a team of approximately 8-24 clinical staff, with each physician supported by a dedicated team. The environment emphasizes collaboration, high clinical standards, and exposure to advanced ophthalmic care and research, including opportunities for career growth into clinical research roles and access to annual continued education support. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs, with short, well-groomed nails and hair securely tied back to maintain a professional, hygienic clinical appearance.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Conroe, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
