SALARY RANGE: $52,217.00 - $65,206.00

This is a grant-funded, time-limited position through September 30, 2027.

The Office of the District Attorney, Prosecutorial District 16, seeks a qualified investigator to perform professional investigative work to support the District Attorney in developing and preparing cases for trial pursuant to the Office’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative federal grant. The successful candidate will identify case-specific problems, acquire facts and documentation, interview witnesses, prepare materials needed for trial, and serve as a liaison with law enforcement agencies.

Must possess a valid NC driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the prosecution of SAKI cold case sexual assaults and sexually-motivated homicides by reading case files, examining files for proper reports and inventory logs, identifying need for additional investigation or follow-up work, testifying at trial as needed, and facilitating custody and care of evidence needed during trial.

  • Locate or relocate witnesses and interview witnesses, including special expert witnesses.

  • Serve subpoenas.

  • Prepare diagrams, photographs, and other exhibits required for prosecution of SAKI cases.

  • Conduct background investigation of witnesses, defendant, and defense experts as directed by the SAKI Prosecutor.

  • Participate in case evaluations pre-charge and after disposition.

  • Provide transportation for witnesses during trial as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies

Knowledge of: evidence collection, investigative techniques, and procedures unique to cold cases; elements of criminal law, particularly North Carolina statutory and caselaw; processes and procedures of the judicial system; basic human psychology; and social, cultural, and economic fabric of the Durham community.

Skills in: observation; analysis; information gathering; fact finding; interviewing; and report writing.

Ability to: make pertinent observations and to analyze those observations against the charges in a specific case or situation; effectively communicate with people of diverse backgrounds, in particular victims of cold case sexual assaults, their families, and the families of cold case homicide victims; establish effective working relationships with law enforcement agencies; write detailed, clear, and concise reports; coordinate and share information; and work well as the member of the District Attorney’s SAKI team.

Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from a four-year college or university, preferably in the field of law, criminal justice, and psychology or sociology, with one (1) year of experience in legal, judicial, law enforcement, or investigative work. An associate degree with three (3) years of experience in the above-mentioned fields may substitute for the four-year degree requirement. Other combinations of education and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
