Culinary II

The primary purpose of this position is to prepare delicious, healthy meals for students according to established recipes, while assisting, inspiring, and mentoring students in a culinary arts program. The Culinary II Cook prepares health-conscious dishes to support and motivate students throughout the school day and ensures a clean, safe, and well-organized kitchen environment.

Essential duties and responsibilities include following recipe cards and health guidelines to prepare meals for students, setting up workstations with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment, preparing ingredients for cooking, cooking food in various manners utilizing a large range of kitchen equipment, monitoring food while cooking to stir, turn, and track time to ensure proper preparation, ensuring great presentation by dressing dishes before they are served, monitoring and maintaining proper food temperature and cleanliness standards during food service, preparing pre-packaged quick serve menu items, preparing foods for catering events associated with the school, maintaining a sanitized and orderly environment in the kitchen, ensuring all food and other items are properly labeled and stored, following FIFO rotation for all products, checking the quality of ingredients before and during preparation, alerting supervisor when ingredients are running low or supplies need to be replenished, assisting, inspiring, and mentoring students participating in the culinary arts program.

General performance requirements include performing duties in a courteous and efficient manner that builds the confidence of staff, students and the public in Siletz Valley School, observing laws, district policies and procedures, and professional standards for the position, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with school personnel, parents, students, and the public; working collaboratively as a team member, carrying out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency conditions, respecting confidential information and the privacy of students, staff and parents, developing job skills necessary to meet changes in the position, meeting applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position, attending work regularly, and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, minimum of three years of experience with kitchen prep and cooking required, experience using cutting tools, cookware, cooking equipment, and bakeware, knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods, ability to follow recipe standards and all sanitation procedures, ability to follow instructions in cooking and cleanliness, ability to solve practical problems and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced kitchen environment, ability to work effectively as part of a team, works well with students, staff, and the public, ability to mentor and support students in a culinary arts program, ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification, valid Food Handler's Card required, background check required, and other certificates as determined by SVS.

Physical demands include talking, hearing and listening in conversations/meetings, walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling for extended periods, using hands, fingers and arms to handle, feel and reach; proficiency in moving around the kitchen required, lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 25 pounds, occasionally lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
