Job Description

The Utility Worker supports safe and efficient production in a heavy industrial forging environment by assisting machine and crane operators, maintaining material flow, and keeping work areas organized and free of debris. This role plays a key part in ensuring product quality, preventing line stoppages, and supporting continuous operations across multiple shifts.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate equipment and line setup activities as requested by operators to ensure smooth production starts.
• Assist operators by pulling heaters after stoppages to quickly restore normal operation.
• Return pieces to the production line at line loaders to maintain continuous material flow.
• Assist crane operators by safely hooking up loads and helping clear pit jams when needed.
• Guide completed first ends from the take-away conveyor to the appropriate rack to ensure proper staging of finished material.
• Remove exit ends from the conveyor when racks are full to prevent jams and maintain orderly storage.
• Verify that all bundles have proper tags with part numbers and heat codes, ensuring accurate identification and traceability.
• Maintain all wood in the steel buildings by organizing and stacking it safely to reduce hazards and improve accessibility.
• Keep all bins and floors free of loose wood and debris to support a clean and safe work area.
• Support the operation of the coater and the press rack as directed, ensuring materials are correctly positioned and handled.
• Operate the pallet conveyor to bring a full skid into position when one has been emptied, doing so without stopping the press or allowing it to run empty.
• Operate cycle push buttons safely and in accordance with procedures to support press and equipment operation.
• Monitor for heat changes and ensure heats are not mixed; inform the operator or appropriate personnel when a heat change is about to occur.
• Verify that each pallet of material has a Green accept tag before loading it into the coater, and notify the operator.
• Watch for material conditions that are not suitable for running through the coater, such as rust, oil, or other contamination, and promptly inform the operator.
• Run sonic reject pieces during periods of downtime and at the end of the job as required.
• Perform general labor tasks such as loading, material handling, and assisting with assembly, inspection, and repair activities as needed.
• Use hand tools, gauges, micrometers, calipers, and other measuring devices to support basic inspection and quality checks when required.
• Assist with production line tasks, including basic machine operation and loading/unloading materials, under direction.

Work Environment

This role is based in a heavy industrial forging facility that is not temperature controlled, so conditions can be hot, noisy, and physically demanding. The environment includes steel manufacturing operations, production lines, presses, coaters, and overhead cranes, with frequent use of forklifts, pallet conveyors, and other material handling equipment. Work involves regular handling of steel parts, wood skids, and production materials, as well as exposure to dust, debris, and industrial noise. The facility operates under a union structure, and employees must be open to working any shift as assigned. Standard shifts are 1st shift (6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.), 2nd shift (2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.), and 3rd shift (10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.), with overtime paid for hours worked beyond 8 in a day. Off-shift work includes additional hourly premiums for 2nd and 3rd shifts. The role requires consistent physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, and working around moving machinery and heavy equipment, while wearing appropriate industrial work attire and personal protective equipment as required by safety policies.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cleveland, OH.

The pay range for this position is $22.22 - $24.22/hr.
