VTI - Veterinary Technician Internship

A Mentored Post‑Graduate Experience Mission: To provide optimal patient care training as well as exceptional post‑graduate education for graduates of AVMA‑accredited veterinary technology programs throughout the United States who are seeking employment in one of the busiest and best‑recognized veterinary hospitals in the world. 52‑week program: Begins September 28th, 2026. The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), one of the world’s busiest and best‑recognized veterinary hospitals, is a private, not‑for‑profit academic veterinary hospital located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. AMC is dedicated to providing compassionate and collaborative care to animals and leading the advancement of veterinary medicine through innovative clinical research and education. This unique Veterinary Technician Intern program was initiated in 1985 and was designed to further the practical training of graduates of AVMA‑accredited Veterinary Technology programs or students graduating prior to the start of the internship. With a caseload of over 54,000 animals per year, AMC offers the unequaled opportunity to develop skill, experience, and confidence in veterinary technology within the world’s largest veterinary teaching hospital. Our Veterinary Technician Internship Program offers a 52‑week training experience working with AMC’s outstanding staff of licensed veterinary technicians and veterinarians. Veterinary Technician Internship Program Description Rotation The internship will be completed over 52 weeks, during which each intern will rotate through the following departments: Anesthesia Behavior Emergency / Critical Care Internal Medicine Medical / Surgical Unit Elective rotations in one of 20 additional specialties During each rotation, interns work alongside clinical educators, veterinarian specialists, and preceptors, and participate in the care and medical treatment of all animals admitted to AMC, assisting with consultations and interdepartmental transfers. Medical and surgical rotations include peri‑operative patient care and surgical care. Bi‑monthly lectures and wet/dry labs are provided in various clinical techniques. Continuing Education VTIs attend regular lectures and labs prepared exclusively for them. Work Schedule Veterinary Technician Interns work a full‑time schedule. Shift patterns vary depending on assignments. Evaluation VTIs will be evaluated periodically. All aspects of the assignment will be formally reviewed in written form and the Education Coordinator will sign the evaluation, acknowledging a discussion of the review. The goal is to identify areas where the intern needs additional experience or assistance. Eligibility Candidates who have graduated from AVMA‑accredited Veterinary Technology programs or are expecting to graduate prior to the start of the program are eligible to apply. Applicants must submit: Application (by clicking “Apply” on this page) Resume (include supporting documents as additional pages) Official or unofficial transcripts Three letters of recommendation from professors or employers (attach to resume) Cover letter describing career objectives and reasons for applying to the program Accepted applicants must possess or obtain a Veterinary Technician license or permit to practice in New York State before the internship starts, and must have passed the VTNE by August 31, 2026 (or be dismissed). If the VTNE has already been taken, a passing score of 425 (or 75 depending on state) must be submitted. Selection Process A panel of Clinical Education team members will review applications. All candidates will be interviewed by telephone, virtually, and/or in‑person. Selectees will receive a notice via email or telephone and a package of necessary materials. Uniforms Uniforms are provided by Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. Compensation and Benefits Pay: $30 per hour (USD). The hourly rate increases upon obtaining New York State licensure. Interns begin medical and dental benefits on the first of the month following 60 days of employment. Paid time off and an extended illness bank accrue from the first day of employment. Retention Bonus: If a VTI is offered a full‑time position at AMC after completing the program, a $1,000 retention bonus will be paid.
