PLC Instrumentation Mechanic Technician
We are seeking a PLC Instrumentation Mechanic Technician to support our clients sawmill operations by maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing electrical and control systems. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliability and performance of PLCs, instrumentation, sensors, and automation equipment across the facility.
This position plays a critical role in equipment uptime, product quality, and plant safety through preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and hands-on technical problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, and industrial control systems
- Diagnose and repair electrical, automation, and instrumentation issues in a production environment
- Inspect, test, and calibrate instrumentation including temperature, pressure, flow, level, and proximity sensors
- Read and interpret PLC logic, ladder diagrams, electrical schematics, and P and ID drawings
- Perform PLC troubleshooting and support control system modifications and upgrades
- Assist with startup and commissioning of new or upgraded equipment
- Support preventive maintenance programs and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain accurate documentation including calibration records and control panel schematics
- Work closely with maintenance, electrical, and mechanical teams to ensure system compatibility
- Train maintenance personnel on control systems and safe troubleshooting practices
- Follow all safety standards including OSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, and company policies
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong PLC troubleshooting experience, Allen Bradley preferred
- Experience with industrial automation, motor controls, relays, and control panels
- Knowledge of analog and digital signals including 4 to 20 mA and discrete I O
- Familiarity with industrial communication networks such as Ethernet IP or DeviceNet
- Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings
- Experience with RSLogix, Studio 5000, or similar PLC software
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced production environment
Education and Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Technical Certificate or Associate Degree in Electrical Technology, Instrumentation, or Industrial Automation preferred
- 3 to 5 years of experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Sawmill, paper mill, or heavy manufacturing experience preferred
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
Work Schedule and Physical Requirements
- Must be available for rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as needed
- Ability to stand for the duration of the shift
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Frequent bending, stooping, climbing, and working at heights up to 7 feet
- Exposure to loud noise, dust, and extreme temperatures
- Use of required personal protective equipment including hearing protection
