Licensed Practical Nurse

Overview Licensed practical nurses performing duties ranging from entry level to first line supervision. Employees provide a variety of patient care activities such as administering medications, maintaining patient records, and assisting in the treatment and direct care of patients. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides fundamental physical and psychological nursing care to patients as part of the multidisciplinary team in accordance with the facilities mission, Virginia Department of Corrections Standards, physician, and patient expectations. Provides total health care to inmates (routine, chronic and emergency care), maintaining continuity of care from admission to discharge. It ensures safe medication administration and providing health services in accordance with Department of Corrections (DOC) policy, American Correctional Association (ACA) standards of care, and ensures operational policies and procedures are followed. To function as a medical health provider to the inmates by performing initial and ongoing medical assessments, prescribing appropriate medication and/or mechanical measures to assist inmates with their medical needs, and assisting with preparation/modification of medical treatment plans. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department. Applies knowledge of principles and practices of practical nursing and pharmacology acquired through formal education and training. Work impacts the quality of practical nursing care and patient comfort. Successful application of skills results in positive patient outcomes. Receives guidance, direction and supervision from an R.N., nursing supervisor, manager, medical professional, or administrator. May take venipuncture specimens. Work requires some discretion and judgment and is clearly defined by the licensure regulations. May supervise or provide work direction to nursing aides or direct service. Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 1 year of prior LPN experience required, corrections experience preferred. A current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider is required.
