Position Summary The Director of Finance / Controller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and serves as the organization's senior accounting leader. The Director of Finance is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of accounting operations while working closely with the CFO on financial reporting, budgeting, audit coordination, strategic initiatives, and continuous process improvement. This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who enjoys balancing technical accounting responsibilities with opportunities to improve systems, develop staff, and build scalable financial operations. Key Responsibilities Lead the organization's daily accounting operations, including: General Ledger Accounts Payable Accounts Receivable Cash Management Bank Reconciliations Payroll coordination Manage the monthly and year‑end close process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Develop and improve accounting policies, procedures, and workflow documentation. Supervise and mentor finance staff while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Financial Reporting & Analysis Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports. Partner with the CFO in preparing financial presentations for executive leadership and the Board of Directors. Perform budget‑to‑actual analysis and identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities. Provide timely financial analysis that supports informed organizational decision‑making. Fund Accounting, Compliance & Audit Manage nonprofit fund accounting, including restricted and unrestricted funds. Ensure compliance with grant requirements and nonprofit accounting standards. Coordinate annual audit preparation and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors. Strengthen internal controls and support organizational risk management initiatives. Budgeting & Financial Planning Partner with the CFO to develop the annual operating budget and periodic financial forecasts. Assist with financial modeling and long‑range planning. Identify operational efficiencies and recommend improvements that strengthen financial performance. Financial Systems & Process Improvement Evaluate and improve accounting workflows and business processes. Support ongoing enhancement of financial systems and reporting capabilities. Help implement scalable processes that support organizational growth. Collaborate with leaders across the organization to improve financial stewardship and operational effectiveness. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience. Experience managing accounting operations and month‑end close. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Preferred Nonprofit accounting experience. Fund accounting and grant reporting experience. Experience supporting annual financial audits. Experience with budgeting and financial forecasting. QuickBooks Online experience. Experience improving accounting systems and internal controls. CPA or CPA candidate preferred but not required.
