The Town of Falmouth welcomes applications for a Highway Laborer position with the Department of Public Works (DPW) Highway Division. This is a stable, full-time, year-round, benefited position that works 40 hours per week and follows a unique seasonal schedule that supports the Town's residential rubbish collection program during the busy summer months while continuing to provide year-round highway maintenance and public works services:

• Memorial Day through Labor Day: Sunday through Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Labor Day through Memorial Day: Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This position has substantial overtime opportunities. Overtime worked between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. is compensated at double-time.

The Town supports and covers the cost of additional licensing and training, and advancement opportunities are available within the Highway Division and other divisions of the DPW.

Under the general direction of the Highway Field Supervisor and Highway Crew Leaders, this position performs residential rubbish collection duties on Sundays and Mondays during the Memorial Day through Labor Day schedule and performs a wide variety of highway construction, maintenance, and public works duties throughout the remainder of the workweek. Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

• Performing residential rubbish collection duties on Sundays and Mondays during the Memorial Day through Labor Day schedule and on Mondays during the remainder of the year;
• Performing manual labor related to road construction, roadway maintenance, culvert installation and repair, catch basin cleaning, street sweeping, roadside brush trimming, and other highway maintenance activities;
• Performing heavy manual labor, including pick-and-shovel work, excavating and backfilling trenches, refuse removal, and assisting with a variety of public works projects;
• Operating Town trucks, hand tools, and power equipment used in highway maintenance operations and assisting with the routine servicing and maintenance of equipment;
• Assisting other Town departments with public works projects and special assignments as needed;
• Performing emergency highway repairs and assisting with other emergency public works operations as needed;
• Observing established safety procedures and complying with all applicable workplace safety requirements; and
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

The Highway Laborer also supports snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, and de-icing roads, sidewalks, schools, parking areas, and other municipal facilities. This position responds to emergency call-back assignments and assists with emergency repairs and storm response operations as needed.

This is an active, hands-on outdoor position involving continuous moderate to heavy physical work performed in a variety of weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, coastal conditions, construction sites, and other potentially hazardous public works environments. The position may require operating motor vehicles and power equipment under varying weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in public works construction and maintenance activities; or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment CORI background check, physical, and drug screening test. Must possess a general knowledge of the equipment, materials, and methods used in municipal public works construction and maintenance and the ability to safely operate hand and power tools.

The successful candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, hardworking, eager to learn, and takes pride in their work. Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, operate equipment safely and effectively, lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, safely perform physically demanding work throughout the workday, and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Required Licenses:

• Massachusetts Class C Passenger Motor Vehicle Operator’s License; and
• OSHA-10 Certification (or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire)

Anticipated Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($23.14/hour) - Step 3 ($25.03/hour)*, commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement along the 9-step pay scale. Overtime opportunities available, including double-time pay for overtime worked between midnight and 7:00 a.m. *Rates effective the first full pay period of July 2026 for FY27.
