Registered Nurse Emergency Room

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room (ER) is responsible for delivering skilled nursing care to patients in a fast-paced, free-standing emergency department setting. This role includes performing assessments, administering medications, managing vascular access devices, and providing specialized care such as rapid sequence intubation and sedation procedures. The nurse collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure effective patient care, including pediatric cases, and assumes responsibilities typically performed by respiratory therapists and pharmacy in this environment. Responsibilities:

• Perform patient assessments and monitor vital signs in the emergency setting.
• Administer medications and treatments including breathing therapies and feeding tube management.
• Manage vascular access devices such as PICC lines, Port-A-Caths, and triple lumen catheters.
• Provide specialized procedures including rapid sequence intubation (RSI), sedation, and cardioversion/defibrillation.
• Carry out tracheostomy care and rapid infuser usage as needed.
• Perform respiratory therapy (RT) duties and pharmacy-related tasks due to the absence of on-site RT and pharmacy services.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care and case management.
• Maintain documentation and communication regarding patient status and treatments.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license with compact license eligibility or appropriate state licensure.
• Current certifications in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in emergency or critical care settings.
• Proficiency in emergency nursing procedures including airway management and vascular access care.
• Strong clinical assessment, medication administration, and treatment planning skills.
• Excellent communication and interdisciplinary team collaboration abilities.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in free-standing emergency departments or similar acute care environments.
• Familiarity with pediatric emergency care, comprising approximately 15% of patient population.
• Additional certifications or training related to emergency nursing procedures and equipment.

Special Considerations:

• Work is performed in a free-standing emergency department without on-site respiratory therapy or pharmacy support, requiring the nurse to fulfill these roles.
• Must be able to handle high-stress, fast-paced emergency situations including pediatric emergencies.
• Travel contracts are available for candidates with appropriate licensure and experience, with a minimum 3-month separation from previous employers outside Swedish facilities.

Scheduling:

• Shift work in the emergency department, including day, evening, night, and weekend rotations as assigned.
• Flexible scheduling to cover 24/7 emergency services, potentially including on-call duties depending on facility policy.
