Registered Nurse In Emergency Room

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 3 years License: Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, SANE Must-Have: Hardworking and reliable.

Description: The unit is not trauma-level designated and does not serve as a STEMI or Stroke center. There are 11 beds with no separate Fast Track or triage area. A triage room is utilized only when patient rooms are full. ER RNs manage patient holds that are intermixed within the ER. Two safe behavioral health rooms are available, but they are not separate from other ER rooms. Security is housed in the ER, but not available 24/7. On average, the emergency room treats 40 patients per day. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3 or 1:4. Required certifications include ACLS, BLS, PALS, and SANE (as of January 2023). Common patient diagnoses include cardiac, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues. 24/7 physician coverage is provided, with NP coverage during 12-hour shifts. The charge nurse takes on patient load, while the house supervisor is available after 3 PM each day. ER techs provide 24/7 coverage; PRN sitters may be staffed by agency staff when needed. Respiratory therapy tasks include performing ABGs, intubation, EKGs, and breathing treatments. Equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and Vapotherm. Registered nurses are required to read telemetry strips; the telemetry monitors are from Nihon Koden. Portable X-rays are available, and transport is done by radiology personnel unless it's a STAT stroke head CT, in which case ER staff transport and monitor. Nurses will attempt IV sticks for lab draws; phlebotomy is completed afterward; Steri-path is used for blood culture draws. The schedule includes 12-hour shifts, with every other weekend and holiday required. There is no call or standby requirement, but open call shifts may be available for pickup. Occasional floating to tasks may be required. Scrubs required are grey tops and black pants. Unit-specific orientation varies based on experience. The charting system used is Cerner.
