The National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) is hiring part-time standardized patients to assist the organization.

Founded in 1951, the National Board of Examiners in Optometry is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization whose examinations are universally accepted for optometric licensure in the United States and internationally. NBEO's mission is to protect the public by developing, administering, scoring, and reporting results of valid examinations that assess competence in optometry.

NBEO has a full-time staff of 28 and utilizes over 100 optometrists as subject matter experts nationwide in support of its examination programs. NBEO is one of the few national boards in any profession with a repertoire of exams that include computer-based tests, an advanced competence exam, and clinical skills test using standardized patients at the National Center of Clinical Testing in Optometry (NCCTO). This role is a part-time, on-site position based in Charlotte, NC.

Important information: Work is available during the testing season, which runs from August through May. The position is not scheduled to operate during June and July, offering standardized patients a consistent annual break between testing cycles.

Highlights:

• Participate as a standardized patient in an optometric licensure examination. In this role you will be trained to sit for examinees by acting as a patient and participating in clinical optometric procedures of an eye examination.
• The typical work week ranges from 12-20 hours, depending on scheduling needs.
• $17 per hour

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED required
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Applicants must be available for testing sessions between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., at least 2 days per week, Monday -Friday. (Wednesday & Thursday availability preferred)
• Must have a reliable form of transportation
• Strong attention to detail in testing procedures
• Effective communication skills
• Ability to provide feedback on candidate performance
• Adherence to exam video and audio recording protocols
• Team-oriented with flexibility to support organizational needs
• Punctual and reliable
• Ability to solve practical problems
• Demonstrate critical thinking skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in the clinical skills exam performed by optometry candidates. Skills that may be performed are described below:
• an assessment of the peripheral retina
• Report to the NCCTO Site Manager and maintain a highly standardized testing environment for candidates taking high-stakes licensure examinations as a Standardized Patient.
• Portray patients
• Serve as a proctor for the Injections Skill Exam, the Laser and Surgical Procedures Exam and Posterior Segment Skills of the Part III PEPS exam when requested.
• Properly complete a checklist before and after testing as part of standard operating procedures
• Clean optometric equipment following specific protocols
• Assess candidate performance based on scoring criteria set for this position
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all secure exam materials and information and candidate information
• Report any testing abnormalities or candidate issues promptly
• Consistently adhere to training and standardization requirements

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing may be required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary. Voluntary projects could require moderate or heavy lifting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

Important Schedule Information: This is a permanent seasonal position, not a year-round full-time role. Our busiest season runs AugustMay, when hours are regularly available. June and July are significantly lighter months and may have very limited or no available hours.

Travel: Travel is not expected for this position.
