For over 35 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships, The provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner. ABOUT PROGRAM:
The CHFS Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive afterschool and summer program serving Brooklyn and Queens youth ages 5-14. We provide education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health programming. The program builds leadership and literacy through creative writing, visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, Yoga, sports, martial arts, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships. We engage entire families through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency's other programs.POSITION SUMMARY:
The CHFS Arts & Literacy Program Director is a dynamic and visionary youth development leader with both arts' education and management experience. They are responsible for all aspects of running the arts afterschool program including but not limited to maintaining a safe, positive after school program; planning events for youth and families; supervision of program content and staff; staff training and development; DYCD outcomes and reporting as well as staff development. At times, the Program Director steps into the classroom to teach or co-teach as they train their instructors. They can review and edit lesson plans, model good teaching, and classroom management for their staff. They serve as a liaison between teaching staff and the CHFS agency, partner schools, and other community organizations. The Program Director builds community by developing relationships with families and fostering family engagement through regular communication and events. The Program Director forms positive relationships with the youth and nurtures an environment where all students are able to develop creatively and academically.RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Management and Compliance Tailor CHFS Arts & Literacy after school model to meet community needs Responsible for overseeing all aspects of programming - ensuring stable, organized, safe and effective program operations that meet CHFS, DYCD and DOH regulations and requirements Be knowledgeable of and implement all safety, security and emergency policies and procedures per CHFS, DOH and/or DYCD regulations Ensure quality programming is being offered and staffing ratios meet DYCD and DOH requirements Oversee a fair and equitable enrollment and participation process for children, youth, and adults that meets the DYCD regulations and requirements Ensure that all participants have completed applications and supplemental forms, and adhere to sign-in/sign-out policies Follow all agency and program policies and procedures as described in the Agency Handbook, program Policies and Procedures, and the Program Director Manual. Please note these documents will be updated periodically, and it is the responsibility of the employee to be abreast of the changes when alerted Educational Leadership Provide coverage in classrooms as needed in accordance with callouts Co-teach to support and model for frontline staff as professional development Hold staff accountable to provide high-quality educational experiences to all participants Model and hold staff accountable for strong classroom management Ensure all staff maintain nurturing and respectful interactions with all participants Review and provide feedback on lesson plans to align with program goals Connect with day school staff to identify and align with daytime learning Observe classrooms and provide constructive feedback for teaching staff Conduct risk assessments and lead crisis interventions Staff Management and Development Fill program and staff schedules in accordance with required ratio for school year, summer camp, and breaks - including break down of duties Share schedule for approval by supervisor. Any last-minute adjustments must be communicated with the supervisor immediately Ensure staff schedules are approved by supervisor in advance each week according to staffing plan provided Supervise, support and coach staff to ensure program quality and compliance Facilitate weekly team meeting, professional development, and performance reviews Participate in hiring Communication and Reporting Communicate with Director of Programs on a regular and ongoing basis regarding program operations, staffing, participant enrollment and participation, off-site activities, all incidents and any factors related to operations that pose a risk to children or staff, or pose a liability to CHFS Meet with Director of Programs for weekly individual and/or group supervision as assigned Attend and actively participate in all other supervision meetings and professional development trainings as assigned Attend DYCD and other regulatory meetings as agreed upon by Director of Programs Communicate changes in programming to leadership, staff members and participants Maintain professional communication with all stakeholders Communicate effectively with leadership via email, phone and in-person Administrative Responsibilities Complete administrative tasks including, but not limited to, maintaining participant and staff files, tracking and documenting facility repair requests, preparing and submitting payment requests in a timely manner Ensure accurate records for: staff time and attendance in ADP that reflects actual hours worked, DYCD attendance, participant binders and records Prepare and submit reports in a timely manner including daily reports, weekly reports to supervisor on attendance and staffing, DYCD reports, Cornerstone deliverables, and incident reports for injuries or other concerning issues Draft incident reports and complete proper documentation as needed by DOH and/or DYCD Community Engagement and Programming Develop and implement a comprehensive recruitment and retention plan to ensure all enrollment and rate of participation goals are met/exceeded Conduct regular and effective community/program outreach Lead and organize program field trips and pickups that meet CHFS, DYCD and DOH requirements, sharing schedule and plan in a timely manner with Director of Middle School Programs Develop family involvement activities, ensuring 90% family participation at minimum 6 events annually Work with agency Creative Art Therapists to identify students who would benefit from additional support services and ensure that behavior management plans are followed accordingly across all contexts Demonstrate flexibility and aptitude in leading new initiatives as needed Participate in agency-wide events Other duties as assignedMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
BA in professional content area, Masters preferred Minimum four years' experience in education or related field with at least three years of experience working with school-aged children Minimum of two years of experience working in a supervisory capacity in a program of Comprehensive knowledge of the arts Occasional flexible schedule is required The Site Director should have a record of successful teaching and artistic accomplishments, should have experience working with children’s needs, exceptional writing skills, ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas, possess outstanding organizational skills, an interest in working with a team, and familiarity with Latinx, African American and Asian cultures. Location and schedule are dependent upon program needs and may change accordingly.
