Assistant Professor - Journalism Job ID: 32536 Job Description: "At Baruch College we believe that student success is everyone’s responsibility" The Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions at Baruch College, City University of New York, invites applications from experienced journalists for a full-time, tenure-track position as an assistant professor with a specialization in business journalism and/or economic journalism, to begin in fall 2027. The department teaches journalistic writing, reporting and multimedia courses across a range of subject‑matter specializations, including business/economics/financial reporting, local and international reporting, politics, environment and cultural reporting. Our fiction writers also teach creative writing. The successful candidate will be required to teach a range of business‑journalism related subjects covering economics, public companies and/or finance, as well as media literacy, journalistic writing and reporting, for print or multimedia. The successful candidate will teach a standard load of undergraduate courses (18 units per year) except when reassigned time is made available by contract or funding external to the department. Additional responsibilities include: Remaining active as a business and/or economic journalist and publishing regularly Being active and engaged in the life of the department and college Taking on a leadership role in organizing events on timely and important topics in journalism Mentoring students at all levels of development Being available to attend evening events sponsored by the department or to teach evening courses on occasion. Compensation and Benefits: $86,741- $102,017; commensurate with qualifications and experience CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement. Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years experience as a professional business and/or economic journalist in a respected business publication, such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes or The New York Times business section and/or a regional news outlet, such as the Texas Tribune or a regional public radio station. In addition, the successful candidate will have: A master's degree in journalism and/or an area of subject‑matter expertise, such as business by August 25, 2027 An established, and continuing, publication record in business and/or economic journalism, including both short‑form and longer‑form journalism Evidence of, or potential for, effective teaching at the undergraduate level The ability to use and teach discipline‑relevant tools, such as FRED and EDGAR Commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment Preferred Qualifications: A published book or book chapter in an established trade, independent, university or regional press Familiarity with narrative writing that incorporates research and reporting Knowledge of the emerging uses and implications of AI for business and journalism Note to Applicants In their cover letter, applicants should fully address how they meet each of the required qualifications.
