Transportation Manager - Greensboro, NC

Job Overview Manager, Transportation will foster a department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. The role involves leading a team of drivers and transportation associates to ensure safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead with a safety mindset, championing safety procedures, processes, and training to create and maintain a safety‑first culture in the Transportation department. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training on policy and procedures, and problem resolution; ensure all staff are appropriately trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities. Discuss performance with Sr. Transportation Managers and create plans to address gaps in driver and associate performance. Create an atmosphere in which upward communication is encouraged and motivate associates to achieve department goals and objectives. Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates, driving associate engagement and retention, and embodying US Foods values. Build high‑performing teams by participating in interviewing and hiring transportation personnel with Sr. Transportation Managers. Review performance, coach on service and safety targets, and deliver disciplinary action as needed. Monitor production goals and maintain a zero‑error attitude to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction. Anticipate, analyze, and troubleshoot delivery problems and devise cost‑effective, legal solutions. Identify and eliminate waste, and improve processes to complete work more safely and efficiently. Conduct routine safety and driver meetings. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files. Investigate all accidents, maintain an accident file, track causes, and implement preventative action. Effectively schedule working shifts using planning tools such as Microsoft Excel. Perform other duties assigned by manager.

SUPERVISION

Direct: Union and/or non‑union drivers.

RELATIONSHIPS

Internal: Transportation leaders and coworkers; drivers; warehouse leaders; internal customers across departments (e.g., Sales). External: Customers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Significant time on the road, often in a truck with drivers, exposed to noise and vibration. Time spent in an office working on a computer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution. At least one year of experience overseeing a workforce. Experience as a driver is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures. Strong leadership, communication, and people‑development skills. Strong understanding of DOT requirements; familiarity with inventory control, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements. Ability to interpret financial and operational data. Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).

TRAVEL

Approximately 10% travel required, typically for mandatory meetings or training.

EDUCATION / TRAINING

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to stand, walk, drive a vehicle, and sit frequently. May lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally; never lifting over 100 lbs.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Base salary range: $60,000 – $90,000. The role includes an annual incentive plan bonus. Benefits may include health insurance, pre‑tax spending accounts, retirement benefits, paid time off, short‑term and long‑term disability, employee stock purchase plan, and life insurance.
