Operating Room Nurse Clinician III - Galveston

Minimum Qualifications RN with two years of preferred clinical experience in operating room, ICU, Cath Lab, and other procedural areas. Must possess and maintain a current license or valid permit to practice in Texas. Current BLS required. Job Summary Competent clinician who meets the standards of the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Experienced and knowledgeable in perioperative care, functioning as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team. Transfers to the operating room must complete the Competency Based Orientation (CBO) tool within 6 months. Provides safe, patient-centered intraoperative care, including pre‑operative reviews, surgical time‑outs, aseptic technique, and intraoperative patient advocacy. Manages equipment, positioning, and emergency situations, collaborating with physicians and the surgical team for optimal outcomes. Essential Job Functions Validate specialized perioperative nursing knowledge. Indicate attainment of current perioperative nursing practice standards. Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans. Participate actively in surgical time‑out and debriefing. Ensure correct patient and procedure are performed. Observe, check, and monitor all equipment used during surgery to confirm optimal function. Assist in positioning and respond to patient comfort and safety. Provide accurate care, handling, and documentation of surgical specimens. Support the surgical technologist during the case effectively. Perform surgical counts (initial, closing, and final) and reconcile incorrect counts per policy. Document accurately all surgical procedures, supplies, and implants. Participate in departmental initiatives related to patient safety, efficiency, cost containment, staff and physician satisfaction, and other projects mandated by the department. Observe and enforce strict standards of asepsis. Take call status and respond to emergencies per policy, "stay days," and work long and unpredictable hours. Maintain collegiality and professionalism during high‑stress situations. Invest and engage in improving staff morale and satisfaction. Complete required specialty‑specific Competency Based Orientation (CBO) tools by the initial performance evaluation due date. Actively participate in the ongoing evaluation of competency using CBO tools and/or Competency and Clinical Advancement Program (CCAP) tools. Assist with activities for assigned area embodying UTMB’s core values. Assess patients and identify nursing diagnoses and care needs. Plan and prioritize culturally, age, and specialty appropriate care. Deliver culturally, age, and specialty appropriate nursing care. Perform and report point‑of‑care testing (POCT). Maintain a clean, safe environment and assist others in proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures. Serve as a patient advocate; may require assistance in difficult situations. Develop and report nursing plan of patient care and treatment. Utilize nursing research and quality improvement to enhance evidence‑based practice. Demonstrate acceptable productivity and practices cost containment. Complete accurate, concise, and legible documentation on all patient, unit, and hospital records. Use electronic forms of communication and documentation. Implement effective patient/family teaching and assess readiness to learn. Identify learning needs, set goals, and create learning opportunities. Demonstrate compassion and understanding. Maintain a professional verbal and non‑verbal demeanor. Act with accountability, compassion, integrity, and respect, putting others’ needs above self. Function as an independent and supportive team member. Achieve required UTMB Competency and Clinical Advancement (CCAP) points to maintain NCIII level. Complete annual self‑evaluation for competency and performance evaluation using CCAP tools. Meet periodic UTMB and unit‑specific compliance requirements for health screening, training, attendance, safety, and CPR. Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.
