The University of North Carolina School of the Arts trains talented students from high school to graduate school for professional careers in the performing, visual and film and television arts. Students are admitted by audition or interview to the schools of: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Film making, and Music. The Division of Student Affairs serves the physical, social, and emotional needs of a highly diverse student body, ages 13+, in the areas of health, wellness, counseling, transportation, orientation, residence life/housing, activities, and student development.
Within the Division of Student Affairs, the Wellness Center has healthcare professionals, counselors, athletic trainers and physical therapists. The Center offers a comprehensive array of services designed to nurture every aspect of our students well-being-from physical health to mental resilience. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals, counselors, dietitians, psychiatrists, and athletic trainers is committed to providing personalized care and guidance to help students thrive throughout their academic journey at UNCSA and beyond.

Primary Description of Work
This position ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare to students, promoting their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Serves as nurse practitioner within the Wellness Center, providing consultation to providers on complex medical cases in addition to providing direct primary care services to UNCSA students. Participate actively in various committee meetings, including divisional team meetings, student groups, and academic and other campus partners' planning sessions, as appropriate. Serve on and sometimes lead various committees that pertain to the delivery of quality health care and the promotion of health and wellness within the university community. The Nurse Practitioner is aware of social factors influencing health and actively maintains a varied and engaged environment. This position reports to the Medical Director in the Wellness Center.

Work Schedule and hours
Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm with occasional weekends

Description of Responsibilities and Duties

Medical Care:
  • Provide comprehensive primary care services to high school, undergraduate, graduate, and summer program students within the UNCSA Wellness Center.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage acute illnesses, injuries, and common chronic health conditions in accordance with evidence-based practice standards.
  • Perform health assessments, order and interpret diagnostic testing, prescribe medications, and develop individualized treatment plans within scope of practice.
  • Provide preventive care services, health promotion, wellness counseling, and patient education.
  • Demonstrate competence in assessing and managing common behavioral health concerns frequently encountered in college-age and adolescent populations, including anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, stress-related conditions, and crisis situations, with appropriate referral and collaboration when indicated.
  • Collaborate with Counseling Services, Student Affairs, faculty, parents/guardians (when appropriate), and community providers to support student success and well-being.
  • Incorporate a holistic approach to care that addresses physical, emotional, psychological, and academic impacts on student health.
  • Provide referrals and coordinate care with specialists, community healthcare providers, hospitals, and other resources as needed.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation within the electronic medical record system and comply with all applicable healthcare regulations and standards.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as required by departmental operations.
Administrative/Program Development:
  • Support development, implementation, and revision of Wellness Center clinical protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure clinical practices remain consistent with current medical guidelines, public health recommendations, accreditation standards, and university policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, compliance activities, risk management efforts, and strategic planning related to student health services.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and best practices in college health, adolescent medicine, and student well-being, incorporating evidence-based recommendations into clinical operations.


Supervision/Leadership:
  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance to nursing and support staff within the Wellness Center.
  • Assist with orientation, training, mentoring, and evaluation of clinical staff.
  • Foster a collaborative, student-centered environment that promotes excellence in healthcare delivery and professional development.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and committees focused on student health, wellness, retention, and success.


Other Duties:
  • Maintain a visible and approachable presence within the campus community.
  • Participate in campus outreach programs, health education initiatives, and wellness promotion events.
  • Support special projects, committee work, and other duties as assigned by Student Affairs and/or wellness center leadership.
  • Contribute to university initiatives that advance student well-being, belonging, safety, and academic success.


Summer Program Requirement:
  • Due to the clinical demands of UNCSA's annual Summer Intensives, employees are expected to maintain availability during this approximately four-week program. Vacation requests during this period may be limited to ensure adequate student healthcare coverage
Minimum Qualifications
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and "approved to practice medical acts" by the Joint Subcommittee.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner in primary care, adolescent medicine, family practice, student health, urgent care, or related settings.
  • Experience working in a college health, university health, school-based health, boarding school, or adolescent health setting.
  • Experience assessing and managing common behavioral health concerns, including anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, eating disorders, and crisis intervention in collaboration with mental health professionals.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams and collaborating with counseling, disability services, student affairs, and academic support professionals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of North Carolina, or eligibility for North Carolina licensure.
  • Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) through an approved national certifying body.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification *Ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina DEA registration and prescriptive authority in accordance with state regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based primary care practices, preventive medicine, and health promotion.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently, use sound clinical judgment, prioritize competing demands, and function effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to providing inclusive, student-centered care to a diverse population of adolescents, college students, and young adults.
  • Ability to maintain all required professional licenses, certifications, continuing education requirements, and credentials throughout employment.
