Job Description Summary: Cover Letter Required About the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), established in 1970 under the name Institute of Medicine (IOM), is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; and beyond. With the authority of the 1863 Congressional Charter of the National Academy of Sciences requested and signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the NAM serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as adviser to the nation and the international community. The NAM’s mission is to advance science, inform policy, and catalyze action to achieve human health, equity, and well-being. About the Program: To meet the demands of 21st Century health challenges, the NAM Leadership Consortium (LC) brings together leaders from major public and private organizations across all sectors of the nation’s health system—clinicians, patients, health care institutions, public health, technology and data leaders, scientists, manufacturers, payers, employers, and regulators. The members of the LC work cooperatively through leadership networks and four Action Collaboratives operating within the four Learning Health System (LHS) domains (science, informatics, incentives, culture): the Evidence & Data Action Collaborative (science); Digital Health & AI Action Collaborative (informatics); Value Incentives & Systems Action Collaborative (incentives); and the Trust & Engagement Action Collaborative (culture). The LHS Strategy Group, comprised of leaders of various aspects of LHS advancement, provides guidance to LHS infrastructure and communication strategies of the LC. About the Position: The LC seeks a highly qualified and motivated individual with unique skills, forward‑thinking, insights, and proactive initiative to provide intellectual and programmatic guidance for the strategically important activities of the NAM Leadership Consortium (LC). As the staff lead for the NAM LHS Strategy Group and related Consortium Member programming, this person works in partnership with all LC staff to ensure that the vision of the LHS and its Shared Commitments are infused throughout the activities of the NAM and the LC. This individual will play a pivotal role in the mission of the LC, the NAM LHS, and the NAM. Projects currently underway include: those related to spread and scale of the Shared Commitments throughout the activities of all health stakeholder organizations; supporting and guiding the activities of the LHS Strategy Group Working Groups on Communication, Infrastructure, and the Business Case; and fostering the engagement of LC Members with all organizations committed to leading and supporting advancement of the LHS and Shared Commitments. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Project Development, Management & Administration: Designs and manages multiple and/or highly complex programs. Develops program strategy, budget, and staffing requirements. Assembles committees and guides those committees in the consensus‑building process. Leads convening activities such as forums or workshops. Communicates and coordinates with the chair and other members of the group. Supports committee members, forum members, workshop participants, etc. in all aspects of work. Identifies and gathers research materials. Solicits and contacts potential panel members. Facilitates the flow of information among panel members, consultants, staff, and other applicable parties. Conducts program or project evaluations and ensures stated objectives are met.
- Sponsor Stewardship: Maintains ongoing relationships with major sponsors and develops new program areas. Conducts background research on topics for new studies, programs, or activities. Writes prospectuses and proposals for new and continuing funding. Identifies potential sponsors. Raises funds for current and future projects. Negotiates funding with sponsors. Where applicable, manages funder/member/alumni relations.
- Financial Management: Responsible for the financial management of assigned programs or projects, including overseeing budget and schedule and authorizing expenditures. As required, collaborates with financial staff to ensure compliance.
- Advanced Research and Writing Activities: Prepares background papers and technical summaries. Develops written products (e.g., reports, proceedings, white papers). Drafts and edits materials for publication. For studies and other applicable programs, synthesizes and edits research findings and technical data and determines the relevance of data for purposes of study.
- Publications: Prepares draft reports which include writing sections of report based on committee input. Edits and reviews the report for format, consistency, and grammar. Manages the response to review, responds to comments and concerns of editors, and prepares the final manuscript for publication.
- Team Management: Supervises program or project staff. Ensures staff are appropriately trained and plans for staff development. Mentors staff. Initiates personnel actions. Conducts performance reviews. Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies.
- Communication, Dissemination, and Information Management: Manages dissemination of reports and other types of publications. Prepares dissemination plan and funding proposal. Manages report production activities. Identifies and engages external organizations in dissemination. Prepares dissemination materials. Conducts dissemination meetings. Collaborates with experts and sponsors from federal, state, and local government agencies, foundations, schools, and other organizations. Represents the unit and committee within and outside the National Academies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Exceptional judgment. Sophisticated knowledge of the policy, scientific, or technical policy issues in a related discipline. Strong program/project management skills. Ability to understand and share technical/scientific issues with diverse audiences. Ability to solve intellectual problems that are varied and complex using originality and ingenuity. Ability to operate using appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to manage and develop projects. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to develop trusting relationships with co‑workers, employees in other National Academies’ departments, external constituents and related leaders through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff and constituents. Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge. Minimum Experience: Six years of related professional experience, two of which involving supervisory responsibilities. Demonstrated capacity for on‑time, on‑budget delivery of results, externally and internally. Demonstrated a high level of proficiency in conveying scientific, technical, and/or policy information in verbal and written form. Desirable Education: Ph.D. in related field preferred. Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to travel. Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None. Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Report to the Executive Director. General direction is provided. Independently supervises project/program staff. Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 60%, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off‑site meeting/sponsor locations. Compensation & Benefits: An estimated compensation range for this position is $105,230 - $164,420. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters.
