Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit - The Division of Student Affairs comprises over 30 departments, each responsible for providing various student support, services, and educational programs accessible to the university community. With over 300 full-time employees and over 1200 student workers, the Division supports Pirate success through environments that enhance student development, engagement, belonging, well-being, and career readiness. The Division strives to be a national leader in developing student experiences that positively transform lives and communities through work that makes students the focal point of our services, policies, and programming; creates a community where all feel safe, included, and welcomed; treats each other with dignity and civility, and recognizes every individual has rights, ideas, and beliefs; maintains open and honest interactions, and delivers high-quality programming, services, and resources through continuous reflection and improvement.
Primary Purpose of Position - The Career Counselor will advise students on their career aspirations and goals, and counsel on career readiness topics. This position will collaborate across Student Affairs and with Academic units in the delivery of career programs to advance career readiness and assist recent graduates with transition into professional roles. The Counselor will be responsible for promotion of Career Services and work to increase engagement among students, staff, and faculty via workshops and written/virtual materials. Additional responsibilities include administration of career-related assessments and reviewing the results of these assessments. The Counselor will plan, develop, and facilitate presentations/opportunities to participate in career development for classes, and student organizations as well as coordinate with employers to deliver development opportunities. Other duties include representation of Career Services at divisional and university events, serving as a point of contact with oversight of data collection via surveys and assessment methods, and developing tools to identify and strategies to address trends in career development and Career Services programming. This position may carry out other duties as assigned by the Director of Career Services or designee.
Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience - A master's degree from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire. Demonstrated knowledge of job market trends, occupational, career and employment information sources. Demonstrated experience advising, coaching, or supporting individuals in academic, professional, or career-related development within educational, nonprofit, corporate, or community settings.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation - None
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience - A master's degree in higher education, student affairs, career counseling, or related area. Two years of full-time experience providing career counseling, career coaching, and career advising or related student services experience in a college/university setting. Demonstrated skill in establishing effective working relationships with staff of all levels, faculty, academic personnel, employers, students and alumni. Experience and proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver services. Excellent writing, presentation, and organizational skills.
