Sports & Recreation Manager

Lead the charge in shaping dynamic sports programs and recreation experiences that bring people together. Reporting to the Senior Director of Health and Wellness Programming, the JCC Greater Boston Sports & Rec Manager develops and manages high‑quality sports programs and activities at JCCGB. This role requires a motivated, passionate, creative professional, able to work autonomously, and is committed to delivering exceptional, member‑focused programming that reflects current trends. The position drives program revenue growth, safety, member satisfaction, and retention through strong sports programming and facility operations. Responsibilities Provide strategic and supervisory leadership of Sports and Recreation programs including Pickleball, tennis, basketball, table tennis, and related activities. Own and manage the strategic direction of these programs – identifying the best offerings, adjusting the portfolio, setting appropriate pricing, and staying informed on new developments. Manage budgets and work with program managers or instructors to drive revenue growth and positive net asset impact. Research, analyze, and forecast new offerings to create incremental revenue; implement and manage these new offerings. Consult and collaborate with program leads outside Health & Wellness for the FEJL youth sports programs and the JCCGB Maccabi team. Ideate, implement, and manage promotional and retention strategies; ensure member satisfaction, policy adherence, and resolve member complaints. Promote sports programs directly and in collaboration with Marketing. Collaborate on ad hoc projects and events such as open houses, member appreciation events, and family fun days. Coordinate administrative functions and logistics to support H&W Sports & Rec programming and sports facility operations. Oversee gymnasium scheduling, coordinate with other departments, serve as point of contact for gym requests, and maintain schedules across Health & Wellness spaces. Update website schedules and booking tools, analyze internal and external markets for trends and opportunities. Plan, schedule, staff, budget, promote all assigned sports-related programs; maintain efficient gym and facility schedules, order equipment, and report safety hazards promptly. Staff Expectations Create a welcoming and dynamic environment where each individual is valued and included. Participate as an essential member of the Health & Wellness team, supporting the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Attend all staff meetings, trainings, and JCCGB All Staff meetings. Perform other assigned duties as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Identify staffing needs and oversee hiring and onboarding of new Sports & Rec staff. Supervise all sports professionals – schedule, manage payroll, collaborate on program strategy, pricing, and promotion. Perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including performance management and problem resolution. Uphold policies, align work with the overall mission, report to the Senior Director of Fitness & Wellness Programs. Create an environment where employees can achieve individual goals; facilitate supervisory meetings and regular staff communication. Coordinate procurement for program needs and oversee equipment and supply purchasing. Attend program staff meetings and management meetings. Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, Recreation Management, or related field (preferred). 2+ years of management experience in coordinating sports and/or leagues (preferred). CPR certification required, or willing to become certified upon hiring. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria. Skills and Abilities Strong leadership and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Comfort with Microsoft Office and ability to learn JCC-specific programs such as SalesForce and UPACE. Knowledge of industry standards and best practices in Sports & Recreation. Experience with budget management and program evaluation. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and build positive relationships with members and program participants. Passion for health, fitness, and wellness. Physical Requirements This position offers occasional opportunities to work remotely for some administrative tasks and requires on‑site/in‑person presence for most responsibilities. Must be able to work in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Remote work requires a laptop, phone, reliable internet connection, and necessary software. Additional flexibility in schedule is required, including response via email or phone as needed, including weekends. Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 40 pounds and be available for occasional weekend and evening events.
