Safety Specialist

What We Are Looking For This role serves as a safety generalist providing support to Contractor Safety program and projects activities across North America. Responsibilities will include entering tracking, trending and supporting the completion of incident investigations for the Operations Support Group. As part of the Project Support group within Contractor Safety, this position will also travel to Kinder Morgan projects and facilities to address and help resolve health and safety issues related to contractor operations. Job level commensurate with experience and skill sets. What You Will Do Assist with compliance monitoring of contractor programs related to Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements OSHA 1910 and 1926 standards, as well as PSM/RMP programs for applicable assets. Promote a positive EHS culture by fostering cooperative relationship and influencing individuals to take personal ownership, safety and compliance. Support Company EHS Teams by enhancing coordination, focus, and overall effectiveness of safety initiatives. Support field activities to ensure proper EHS equipment is utilized and that established procedures are followed at work sites. Assist in incident investigations, including data entry, tracking, trending, and follow‑up to closure. Develop a working knowledge of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and/or Systematic Cause Analysis Technique (SCAT) Identify, research, and help resolve gaps within Company EHS processes and programs. Manage multiple tasks effectively in high‑pressure, time‑sensitive environments. Provide support in the following areas: Contractor O&M and office assessments Contractor support and help sessions Internal and contractor requests for ISNetworld (ISN) and Contractor Safety Program user training Project support, including field presence, program development, and site inspections Conduct contractor safety audits (e.g., Field Audit Network - FAN) Support office‑based EHS activities, including: Entry and management of incident data within Company systems Assisting with investigation documentation and closure of corrective actions Preparing reports with supporting documentation (including photos) Tracking action items to completion within established timelines Developing and reviewing reports for data analysis, KPIs, and trending Assist with development, improvement, and maintenance of EHS programs, processes, and documentation. Communicate effectively through written reports, presentations, and collaboration with internal stakeholders and contractors. Perform other duties, weekly/monthly tasks, and special projects assigned. Education High school diploma, or equivalent is required. Associate’s degree, or some college, in business, accounting or a related discipline is desirable but not required. Experience / Specific Knowledge Minimum of 2 years of related experience required; 5+ years of relevant professional experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge or experience supporting in at least one of the following: OSHA compliance, EPA Risk Management Program, spill containment, and/or waste management programs. Ability to write clearly and concisely for different types of audiences and deliver presentations clearly and persuasively. Competencies, Skills, Abilities Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft applications (including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint) for word processing, spreadsheets and information retrieval. Strong reading, listening, and analytical skills with logical thought processes, with the ability to identify and resolve complex issues/problems. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships and provide effective customer service. Ability to successfully organize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously, frequently under strict deadlines. Ability to analyze events at the transaction level and apply sound and consistent resolutions. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must be able to maintain confidentiality. Ability to actively and positively contribute to team strategies. Ability to successfully perform the required and expected duties with little direct supervision. Ability to work with a team, take directions from supervisor(s), focus attention on details, follow work rules and adhere to established work schedules. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Follow directions from supervisors, maintain required work schedules, adhere to established procedures and work rules and demonstrate strong attention to detail. Physical Demands Sit for prolonged periods of time in an office environment. Participate in field walkthroughs for extended periods of time and walk job sites that may have large area, rough terrain, and adverse weather conditions. Working Conditions Primary office location is Houston, TX downtown. Approximately 25-50% travel to support contractor safety activities, audits, inspections, incident investigations and project related field assignments. Must possess a valid driver’s license with driving acceptable to the company and its insurers (required for travel). This position is a hybrid work schedule with Monday-Wednesday in the office and Thursday-Friday remotely. NOTE: There may be instances where business need requires the employee to work in the office or on a project on a scheduled remote day. The successful candidate will be required to clear up a drug screen and a complete background check, including credit report, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed. Field assignments may require exposure to varying weather conditions, construction activities, industrial operations, and other environments requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications, Competencies, Skills, And Abilities Experience conducting statistical analyses and working with incident investigations. OSHA 30 Standards in Construction. OSHA 30 Standards in General Industry. Bilingual; fluent in verbal and/or written Spanish. Solid knowledge of incident root cause analysis (RCA) or systematic cause analysis technique (SCAT) terms, principles, and practices.
