The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing of samples, and maintaining high standards of safety and regulatory compliance. This role also contributes to troubleshooting workflow issues, training others, and recommending process improvements to keep the laboratory running efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using appropriate techniques and equipment such as straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, maintaining specimen integrity and following all protocols.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately to ensure proper identification and traceability.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following detailed laboratory protocols.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens for transport in accordance with established guidelines to maintain specimen quality and safety.
• Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test type.
• Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to preserve specimen integrity.
• Record maintenance data and assist with decontamination procedures to support safe and efficient lab operations.
• Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems to ensure complete and current records.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and test processing.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to respond to inquiries as permitted by policy.
• Participate in troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality in the lab.
• Assist in training colleagues or new staff on phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling, and workflow processes as needed.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, as well as all internal safety and quality policies.
• Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 2–4 years of overall work experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including performing blood draws and handling various specimen types.
• Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite proficiently.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, matching of requisitions, and verification of test orders.
• Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians' orders related to laboratory testing.
• Knowledge of proper specimen storage, handling, and transport procedures.
• Ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety protocols.
• Effective communication skills to explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries over the phone.
• Capability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in both laboratory and hospital settings is beneficial.
• Familiarity with centrifuges and other laboratory equipment used in specimen processing.
• Experience recording maintenance data and participating in decontamination processes.
• Ability to assist with training and mentoring team members on phlebotomy techniques and workflow best practices.
• Comfort with troubleshooting workflow issues and suggesting process improvements.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment where timely and accurate specimen collection and processing are critical. You will work with standard phlebotomy tools and equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and various specimen containers and tubes. The position requires frequent interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff, as well as regular use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication. You will follow strict safety, regulatory, and quality protocols, including compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, and participate in annual departmental trainings. The environment emphasizes teamwork, precision, and adherence to established procedures to ensure reliable test results and a safe workplace.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Wichita, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
