Major Case Specialist General Liability

Job Category: Claim Compensation Overview Under general supervision, this position investigates, evaluates, reserves, negotiates, and resolves assigned serious and complex General Liability claims. It provides quality claim handling throughout the claim life cycle, including customer contacts, coverage analysis, investigation, evaluation, reserving, litigation management, negotiation, and resolution. The role also offers consulting and training, serving as an expert technical resource to other claim professionals, business partners, customers, and stakeholders. Responsibilities Directly handle severe claims with coverage of $2M or less and exposure >$500k. Ensure file quality, timely coverage analysis, and customer communication. Collaborate with Manager on Claim Coverage Counsel use. Investigate claims through strategic contact with policyholders, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts. Take statements, complete outside investigations as needed. Use evaluation documentation tools per department guidelines; review Claim File Analysis for quality and trend. Manage diary system to guarantee timely claim handling. Evaluate liability and damages exposure at required intervals. Establish and maintain indemnity and expense reserves. Recognize and implement alternative resolution methods. Manage litigated claims: develop litigation plans, oversee discovery and legal expenses, attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre‑trials, trials, and other proceedings. Update parties on new facts and their impact on liability and settlement. Identify cases that should be transferred to higher-level professionals. Evaluate claims for recovery potential; handle recovery efforts or direct company resources. Assist underwriting partners with marketing and account contact efforts. Attend and present at roundtables or authority discussions to improve payout on indemnity and expenses. Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to less experienced claim professionals. Offer guidance to underwriting partners on reserve accuracy and future changes. Recommend cases for round‑table discussion. Implement advanced litigation management: counsel selection, strategy direction, and expense control. Maintain confidentiality of personal information. Meet service commitments set by Special Account Communication (SAC) instructions. Represent the company as a technical resource in legal proceedings within professional and state regulations. Collaborate with business partners to achieve quality results. Research legal trends and communicate findings to support underwriting and management decisions. Participate in periodic file quality reviews. Acquire and maintain required insurance license(s) within three months of start and complete continuing education as required. Perform additional duties as assigned. Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. 5–7 years of bodily injury litigation claim handling experience. Advanced knowledge of coverage, liability, and damages analysis with a thorough understanding of litigation processes, case law, and statutory law. Extensive claim and/or legal experience and technical expertise to evaluate severe and complex claims. Ability to make independent decisions on most assigned cases. Deep understanding of business line products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claim handling practices. Technical proficiency with virtual tools (Zoom, Skype, etc.). Strong customer service mindset and advanced coaching, influence, and persuasion skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences. Strong technology aptitude using business technology tools. High attention to detail and accuracy. Advanced competencies in Analytical Thinking, Judgment/Decision Making, Communication, Negotiation, Insurance Contract Knowledge, Principles of Investigation, Value Determination, Settlement Techniques, Legal Knowledge; intermediate in Medical Knowledge. High School Diploma or GED plus a minimum of 4 years bodily injury litigation claim handling or comparable claim litigation experience (must-have).
