Position Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Medical-Surgical

Reports To: Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing

Status: Full-Time

Shift: Nights, including weekends and holidays as scheduled

Position Summary

The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse provides safe, compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to adult patients with a variety of acute and chronic medical and surgical conditions. The RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized patient care while collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

The RN promotes patient safety, quality outcomes, effective communication, and a positive patient and family experience while practicing in accordance with hospital policies, professional nursing standards, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive and ongoing nursing assessments and identify changes in patient condition.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing plans of care based on patient needs and clinical priorities.
• Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, treatments, and other prescribed therapies in accordance with hospital policy and standards of practice.
• Monitor vital signs, laboratory results, diagnostic findings, pain levels, intake and output, and other clinical indicators.
• Recognize changes or deterioration in a patient's condition and initiate appropriate interventions and escalation of care.
• Provide safe preoperative and postoperative nursing care when applicable.
• Implement evidence-based fall prevention, pressure injury prevention, infection prevention, and other patient safety practices.
• Participate in purposeful rounding and proactively address patient safety, comfort, mobility, toileting, and pain-management needs.
• Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, fall prevention, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, case management, social work, pharmacy, rehabilitation services, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and contribute to discharge planning and patient throughput.
• Complete accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation in the electronic medical record.
• Follow appropriate handoff communication practices during shift changes, transfers, and transitions of care.
• Maintain compliance with infection prevention practices, medication safety standards, patient identification requirements, and hospital policies.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies, rapid responses, and changes in patient condition.
• Delegate appropriate patient-care activities to nursing assistants and other members of the healthcare team while maintaining accountability for nursing care.
• Serve as a patient advocate and protect patient privacy, dignity, rights, and confidentiality.
• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, nursing education, and unit-based initiatives.
• Report safety events, near misses, medication events, falls, and other clinical concerns through established hospital reporting and escalation processes.
• Maintain required annual competencies, education, certifications, and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and respectful communication with patients, families, and colleagues.

Qualifications

Education

• Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program required.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure/Certification

• Current and unrestricted New York State Registered Professional Nurse license required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
