Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: As a journeyman Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic, you will diagnose, overhaul, and repair heavy-duty vehicles, engines, electrical systems, and marine vessels for the outside maintenance section at the Oahe Project. Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common journeyman-level diagnostic testing, component replacement, and minor-to-moderate repairs on heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. I can perform routine engine tune-ups, adjust linkages, replace worn parts (such as road wheels, tracks, brake shoes, and starters), and perform minor structural/hull adjustments. I can troubleshoot basic electrical wiring and replace standard fuel components like fuel lines, fuel pumps, or carburetors. I operate vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 26,000 pounds and possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods and requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The mechanic frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 or 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and occasionally outside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work dirty, greasy and noisy, possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools, slipping from work position.
