911 Communications Officer - Part Time

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Use a computer-aided dispatch system to receive emergency calls, assess nature and location of incidents, prioritize, and dispatch police, fire, EMS, or other emergency units according to established procedures. Transmit and receive messages via public safety radios, 9-1-1 lines, data terminals, and other communications equipment. Maintain contact with all units on duty; keep status and location of law enforcement and fire units. Monitor activities of office staff and other emergency providers, taking appropriate action to aid anyone exposed to danger or in impending danger. Inquire, enter, update, interpret, verify, receive, and disseminate information from national, state, and local law enforcement computer networks for missing persons, stolen property, restraining orders, etc.; monitor multiple complex radio frequencies. Operate public‑safety communications systems, radio dispatch consoles, and related equipment. Maintain contact with callers when required. Provide basic life‑support instructions following National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAED) guidelines. Provide scene safety instructions to callers involved in high‑risk situations until first responders arrive. Answer non‑emergency calls for assistance. Create and maintain accurate records and transactions in RMS, providing documentation for all events within the Communications Center. Interpret messages, analyze distances and time periods, and communicate findings to others. Assist with training, direction, coordination, and evaluation of trainee activities. Provide needed backup to other staff during absences and peak workloads as directed. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES

Ability to use GPS and GIS data related to county landmarks, roads, and businesses. Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch functions, call types, and codes; understand proper call entry for law‑enforcement and fire dispatch. Quick, accurate, and calm decision‑making in emergency or stressful situations and the ability to handle traumatic details related to service calls. Maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations. Interpret and implement local policies, procedures, written instructions, and federal, state, and local regulations. Organizational and time‑management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work while adapting to changing priorities. Perform detailed work accurately and independently with minimal direction, meeting stringent time limits. Use computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, database) consistently for this position. Perform required mathematical calculations. Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in English both written and verbal. Research and understand complex written materials. Prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports. Apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems, and interpreting policies and regulations. Handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times. Maintain effective working relationships within and outside the organization. Work allocated hours and respond after hours as needed. Be able to testify in court as a credible and trustworthy witness.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds; requires sitting, standing, speaking, using hands, repetitive motions; occasional walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching with arms. Standard vision and hearing required. Requires vocal communication and hearing normal spoken word levels. Prepare and analyze written or computer data and observe general surroundings and activities. No exposure to environmental conditions; work in a moderately noisy office setting. May encounter hostile, aggressive, abusive, or violent individuals, potentially posing threats. Qualifications Education High School diploma or equivalent. Experience Must have or obtain TIME system and CPR certification upon hire. Must successfully pass a criminal background check. Must have prior Police, Fire, or EMS dispatch experience with at least one year in a related role. Preferred Previous extensive dispatching experience and personal contact with the public.
