Position Summary The Charge Nurse assists the nurse manager/director in coordinating, directing, and evaluating patient care, unit activities, and staff performance. The role incorporates nursing process knowledge and professional standards, manages clinical and non‑clinical activities during the shift, and ensures smooth unit operation in the absence of the manager/director. Responsibilities Supports, evaluates, prioritizes and supervises patient care and unit needs during assigned shift. Serves as designee for unit matters in manager/director absence. Makes staff assignments to meet patient care needs and for incoming patients. Delegates unit‑specific task assignments and monitors their completion. Evaluates staffing by considering caregiver mix, patient volumes, acuity and staff availability. Communicates effectively with team members and others during shifts. Leads performance improvement and quality initiatives, using change management methods. Acts as role model and facilitates customer service, including service recovery efforts. Mentors staff, supports professional development, and preceptor training. Provides coaching for nursing associates. Assists with quality projects, performance evaluations, and troubleshooting issues. When not in charge nurse role, takes patient assignments or acts as preceptor as needed. Represents the unit or department on committees or task forces. Reinforces the organization’s vision, mission and values through role‑model behavior. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Education: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Experience: Minimum of 1 year of RN clinical experience. Licensure/Certifications: Valid current Arizona Nursing License Clinical specialty credential within 3 years of ANCC or similar (e.g., CCRN for critical care) Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and other department requirements as applicable Preferred Requirements: BSN degree Organization Description Established in 1961, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson is part of the Carondelet Health Network and offers advanced care including a Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and high‑quality programs in cardiology, orthopedics, stroke, and emergency medicine.
